ok i told you guys i would post the pics when i get around to working on the car i got out there today took forever to do anything but i got the front cover off and here is where the dots are. its at tdc and the distributor was at number 1. but this is what i dont understand i know the two marks are suppose to be pointing themselves at 6 and 12 o'clock. but i turned the motor over and if i turn the motor over completely one full turn on the crank to tdc again the dot on the cam and crank line up at 6 and 12 then one more full turn and its back to both being at 12. im confused. what do i do? is it out of time or not? also i took the push rods and just making sure rolled each one again and they dont seem to be bent i swear they were bent when i pulled them and posted the thread before but they dont seem to be idk why but is there another why except rolling them to make sure?? thanks
See the "dot" on the cam gear, it should line up, with the "Dot" on the crank gear. The cam gear "Dot" position will be at 6 o'clock, and the crank "Dot" will be at 12 o'clock. Did your timing set come with any instructions? Looks like it's at the square (or maybe an "R"?), not the "zero" or "Dot" (which would be 0 dergrees )...so whatever that square is, it's either advanced, or retarted..... Is there 3 key ways on the crank sprocket?
well the dot is there but there are 3 key way marks on the gear and i didnt see that when i put it on so its on the square that on the crank to tdc
You have both gears pointing in the wrong position. You wanna use 0 degrees on the crank. It should have a round symbol. The triangle symbol is advance 4 degrees...the square symbol is -4 degrees. Both cam and crank marks should be close together
well my instructions say that the square mark means that its 4 degrees retarded and that the circle is 0 degrees for oem specs. so i just need to reinstall it with the circle mark being used. also with my push rods is there another way to check them?? i swear that a couple was bent last time i was out there
Unless you have a degree wheel, set those marks up at 0. That's straight up 0 degrees timing, just like it was from the factory.
ok so ill reinstall the timing chain with the circle on the cam at 6 o'clock and the circle on the crank at 12 o'clock and i should be at stock timing. yea ill try not to break it guess that means you broke the glass
If they are bent you may have more problems on your hands. To bend them you either had to stack the springs or smack the piston with the valves. Let's hope they're straight. As far as the dots alternating from 6 & 12 to 12 & 12, it's because the crank makes 2 revolutions to the cams 1.
Yeah, I don't think it would be a bad idea to pull the heads, since the motor is out....for the price of new head gaskets, it might save you more work, if you just replace the pushrods....
