ok im going to try to make this as short as possible.... i dont know if anyones fallowed all my threads the past 6 months or not but i bought the car (72) as my first car back in november past 6 months everything possible has gone wrong between the fuel tank to the carb to electrical to suspension to the engine and ive rebuild it all thought i was finished filled it with up with fluid. and left it late last night. cam home from high school today and went striaght out there to crank her to try to start. well theres antifreeze everywhere under the engine bay my raditor is full thou.... what have i dont wrong and what needs to be done????? i was just told by my dad that i need to crank it and try to see where the leak is at and maybe its just a seal that needs to warm up or something im going to try to do that right now cus it cant really get worse i guess can anyone help me you all have been great help up to this point just want her finished and running so i can have some money put every last cent i have into her thanks guys
i am with earl on the initial cause, but also make sure the oil is not any higher than it was yesterday on the dipstick. also hand turn it to make sure there are no cylinders filled with water also.
im not sure i did start it thou it needs timing but it started and kept a fast idle and theres no leaks so idk what it was but its dry now and it ran so should have no worrys right?
yea i only ran it for about 20sec and the timing is out so it was starting to backfire so i killed it since my timing light that i thought worked doesnt and i have to get a new tach the one i have doesnt seem to work have to check the wiring first but yea and i had about 45 on the oil pressure and my water temp hadnt gotten over 100 which is the lowest temp on my gauge
20 seconds won't be long enough to tell anything, unless it was like an absolutely horrible leak. Need to let it get up to operating temperature, and look it over good, squeeze the upper hose to see if it's got a little pressure on it.
ok i can do that going to do that tomorrow when i get a new timing light... any tricks to timing??? never done it before i was told like 6-8 degrees i dont really know what that means was going to start a thread to see... but ill do that let it warm up and see what happens
sounds like you have had it apart a couple times, ide leave the cap off for a while, JUST INCASE of high temp
i aways use block sealer in a new motor ,just pour it in the raditor ,and run it till it gets up to temp about 190 ,at a fast idle to break the cam in , should run for 20 mins at least ....
Quickest and easiest way to check cooling systems for leaks is a pressure tester. If you can get your hands on one you can find out if you have a leak in a matter of minutes. For the timing check it with the vacuum line plugged. When looking at the timing tab from the front of the car you want the mark on the balance to line up with the 6 or 8 (if that's the setting you are going to use) degree mark to the left of the zero mark.
