I recently purchased a 69 Short Boss "V" Hoodscoop. You know the Mach 1 style w/directionals in back.

I have everything prepped for install but need a couple people to pull a quick dimension for me off their car. I will be making it functional in the future after my small block goes in but need it located now properly.

Here's the criteria before you run and grab your tape :)

302 Engine in standard location (factory motor mounts or equiv.)
Performer RPM or Performer Airgap Intake
+- 1/8" accuracy with tape measure

Attached pic, need dimension from leading edge of cowl to centerline of your air cleaner bolt. that's it.

Thanx in advance for your help, should be interesting to compare a couple of peoples numbers... :tiphat:

FYI...The Boss scoop didn't have turn signals and was much larger than the Mach I scoop.

If you don't have an answer by this weekend, I can tell you then. I'm out of town and when I get home I'll have a hood scoop waiting for me that I'll be making functional on my 302 equipped Mav with edelbrock intake. And like rthomas said, the scoop you have sounds like a Mach 1 scoop, they had the turn signals.

I have the Mach 1 scoop on mine with a Performer RPM. I just lined up the rear edge of the scoop with the rear edge of the hood. The turn signal assemblies hang below the scoop and fit inside the hood brace underneath. Had to cut rectangular openings in the hood and ran the wiring inside the brace. You have a lot of "wiggle room" as to where to locate the opening for the carb.

OK thanx guys, good info but not what I need. I will elaborate a little hope to not sound like a smart&*%...

First I know what I have it's the Short Boss "V" as in picture attached and yes it is a Mach 1 cobrajet style w directionals.

Secondly I need the the dimension as posted above because I will be cutting the hole for carb while I am mounting the scoop and want it centered about the the carb center bolt. I will be blocking of the inlet of scoop for now via a piece of rubber behind the grill. When I drop in the smallblock I plan to use the functional ford air cleaner with open top and the foam interface ring to seal under the hood, remove my block off rubber and ready to rock.

So here I am back needing only the dimension asked for... whew hate typing but I got through it.

Thank you guys again, fyi Ive been Mechanical Engineer for 30 years and own a small Machine Shop so I have no shortage knowledge or resources.
I'm just trying to do this once and cut the hole in the right spot without having to use a adapter plate afterwards.

if you guys could get me this dimension I will be able to position it to my preference. It may very well be 1/2" from back of hood but well see.

Thanx guy's anyone else reading is welcome to throw a dimension too !

Here's how I did mine. I basically used the bracing as a guide and cut everything out in between. If you just want a round hole, get some threaded rod and screw it into the carb, then back it out until it just touches the hood when closed. It will make a mark on the hood to use as the center point for the hole.

Wow, I have one of those scoops, I never knew what it said on the bottom, now I'm going to have to look. I like them much better than the Comet GT one, they seem to be overdone on Mavericks.

What kind of tolerance do you need? I don't know that anyone else's dimensions will help you. These cars are not very dimensionally accurrate to start with and shift even more over time. Even the gap you set at the rear of the hood will have an affect on the scoop location. In my car, a 70 that originally came with a 6 cylinder, when I finally installed the correct V8 frame mounts and motor mounts it moved the engine forward over 1/2". The scoop does just bolt on and is easy to remove to cut the hole later once the engine is in. But I'll measure mine tonight and post.

Thaought I would be the one to finally give you what you need but I have an EFI intake sitting on mine.

Mavaholic, your method for locating the hole would work but he has a 6 in there right now.

I hope I didn't come off sounding like a smart&*% too. I never heard of a 69-70 Fairlane/Mach I scoop called a Short Boss "V". I also have the same scoop in my garage. We have seen a lot of new members come on here who think all 302's are Boss engines and all 9" rear ends are Traction-Loc...but they will call it a posi which is a GM term (I guess my blood is a little more blue than orange). I checked your profile and noticed it didn't show your age so as far as I knew you could have been a little kid and didn't know what you were talking about. LOL :Handshake

Now I know you know what you're talking about. (y)

Wow Mavaholic thats clean, nice work. Makes me want to paint my car red white and blue ! Pictures speak a thousand words. Looks like you got perfect placement and I think I will follow your lead. I'll post some pics when done on my build thread which I have not started yet.

As far as everyone else here, you peeps are the best ! Yes I'm an older seasoned hot rodder and I do notice the great effort all you guys give to helping out the younger crowd. Goes without saying but these boards are pinnacle of what a online community should be like. (Kudos to Stephan as well he runs a tight ship here)

Well my Maverick friends, thanx for your all your input and patience and get used to me being around and asking crazy questions my maverick build is moving along and it's been 20 or so years since I had a V8 anything. I have some big plans for this car.

    Dave

jmgford... exactly the one. very nice setup u got there

bmcdaniel...thanx that will help it gives me a pretty good ballpark to get over the pain of cutting up my perfectly good hood. The car is in mint condition but just way to grandpa for me so it gets a major face-lift.

I have drove it with the six and although I have had a blast driving something vintage it's time for some gofast stuff.

Know what you mean, I bought my 6 cylinder Mav in January of 1973, before the end of the year the 6 was out and the V8 in.
