Have you had the drain pan off the bottom of the transmission? If so did you mess with any of the linkages in there? If the internal linkages get off that sure can mess with not being able to get the tranny in neutral.
As to the c5 and I am probably wrong but I always thought the c5 was almost the same as the C4 but the C5 had a locking torque converter. Therefore it had a DEEPER bellhousing area and different valve body? Is that anywhere near right?

i did have the bottom pan off, i had to reverse the shifter linkage on the tranny because it went the opposite way of my beast's linkage. but i put everything back exactly. i had the old tranny open for reference.

you obviously messed somthing up when you were monkying with the linkage you probly unhooked the valve that is hooked to the parking paw so it is stuck in a foward gear the only reason it dont move in park is because of the parking paw prevents it.

You don't have the manual valve (in the valve body) connected to the shifter correctly. When you put the valve body back in the pin on the shifter has to be lined up with the first "cut-out" in the manual valve. Once you get that done then you have to adjust the linkage with the shifter in Drive and the transmission in drive.
(Drive is the third position CCW from the fully clockwise position)Fully CW is Low, second position (first click CCW) is 2nd, third position (2nd Click CCW) is Drive.
Fill and check the fluid level (type F fluid) with the engine idling in Park.

    Nice.

that makes alot more sense paul. thanks! i sat there staring at the computer screen for a good five min from trying to figure out what you said, and then a lightbulb went off and it all came together.

good info for a beginner attempting to mess with his tranny.
i'll open it up and put that in there like you say and get back to you on the status of my car.....

If you have all forward gears, Park and neutral but no reverse then your problem is most likely in the rear band. The rear servos have a seal that is bonded to the steel piston - they frequently crack and won't apply. I would start there. First check to see if you can tighten the rear band. If it will tighten up then the band and struts are in place and not broken. Remove the rear servo cover (you are going to need a new servo piston assembly and a new seal for the cover) Remove the piston and replace it with the new one after lubricating it with vaseline. Coat the new seal (lathe cut oring) with loctite or permatex #518 sealant. Install the cover and adjust the band.

    more questions...

Ok... so i fixed the valve body in the transmission, fixed the passing gear..

    here's whats goin on...
    engine on

car in reverse, push on the accelorator, takes a bit, then weels will spin for 5 sec, then slow to a stop, then spin for five secs, then slow to a stop...

same with drive, 2, and 1....

    HELP!!

mav tranny went out, so i got a c4 tranny, bellhousing, and torque convertor from a guy who took it out of his granada, but i decided to use the smaller torque convertor and bell housing from my maverick, INSTEAD of the one that i got from the granada... i'm not sure if what i did was wrong...

will putting a smaller torque convertor cause my symptoms, or is it something else that i'm not currently aware of?

    my symptoms:

it seems as though the weels are "catching" when i push on the accelorater... even though its easier to go in reverse.... its still "catching"... :/
