im installing a tach and a 3 pod set (volt, water temp and oil pressure) can anyone show me a pic or a diagram of where the key on wire is and the lights on wire?? and the old wires that come from the connector at the fire wall if i just cut and cap them are they fine?
Don't remember the colors off hand, but for key-on I used the radio power wire and for lights the radio light wire.
there is a blue/white wire in the steering wheel harness that has a funky white/off white connector thing. I used that one for the light source because it will dim when you turn your headlight knob. For the key on I also used my radio wire as well and sorry but don't recall what colors they were. Tried looking at the diagram but couldn't find it.
I did the same, my radio wire is a thick yellow one. i don't know if the earlier cars are the same color.
thanks ill look for them tonight while im working out there just shes so close to running and i cant wait plus prom is coming up less than 3 weeks for my girlfriends and then mine is 3 weeks after then so want to show it off
ok yea i looked at it and i dont have a blue/white wire and my car i guess had a radio at one point but when i bought it there was no radio so.... im really lost now... i did hook up my battery to poke at in the holes of the wiring connector at the base of the steering column and there was nothing lit up the bulb on the tester i have but my lights on the car worked so idk if the battery is just like too low on volts to show anything or what im super lost right now
ok so i looked out there again tonight and from the wiring connection at the steering column i didnt see a blue/white wire but a white wire with a light blue strip on it so is that what you were talking about? and i think i might of found a wire that is a key on wire. i have a tester thats a 6/12v light tester and like when i have the key out the light is real dim and when i turn the key into the on spot the light turns real bright. is this right??? im really confused about wiring as you can tell
the way i would use the tester is attach the black lead to ground and then pick the wire you are going to test. you may need to put a tiny cut into the insulation of that wire to get the other lead to touch the copper inside the wire you are going to test. with the key on off see if you get any voltage reading, then with the key on the on position see if you get a voltage reading. if you have voltage in the on position and not in the off position you have your switched source.
ok i did that ( the tester i have has like the light bulb in it and its a 6/12v) and like nothing gives me a light in the on or off key postion just this one wire and one fuse and the light is real dim when the key is off and a real bright light when its on like idk if thats the wire or what im lost and the light wire i cant find that anywhere under there either
the light should be off when the key is off. the stock stereo plug is located to the right of the stearing colum. its a two wire plug. one wire is blue with a black tracer and i cant rember what the other wire color is. the plug looks like a two prong version of a trailor lights plug. the blue wire is for lights and the other wire is for power from the ignition switch. it should be hanging just a few inches next to the stearing colum under the dash. if you need a full time power source, you can use the wire that goes to cig. ligher.
ok ill search again under there maybe its tired up out of the way cus there was nothing hanging down .... so blue is lights and there other is the ignition wire.... thanks i think i understand that i little better
I'm not sure why you have some faint juice to that wire you are talking about when the car is off but that should work. I would go ahead and use that wire.
ok well im trying to wire it and i like the blue one gives me the lights and that works but the other one (the one that was giving me a faint light well when its hook to the volt gauge it like makes the needle jump between 10 and 14 volts then when i turn the key to the on position is settles at about 13 volts... why is this i mean that means like the wire is like going to make my battery die if i leave it like that right? and i poked around the fuse box with my tester and the same thing a faint light on one fuse and when i turn the key its a solid bright light so..... im lost.... and i have to wire my tach to this same key on wire.
does it have something to do with the voltage regulator like i repainted my engine bay and its bolted to the side like on top of the paint does it need to go to straight metal??? also on the bottom of the plug in for it theres a green wire and a yellow one that goes to i think the positive side of the solenoid like those wires fell out and i figured they both went together is this right or not?
