I've got a small budget to use for Mav stuff and ignition is up now. I'm looking at ordering this Pertronix Ignitor II from Summit and I've decided to double check before I get it. There's only one option for sixers that I can see and I feel like I'm sure that I have a Motorcraft distributor in my car. It's a 4 door 1974 250 straight 6 engine. I found the right kit, didn't I?
The original Pertronix 1 is made to swap in without changes to the stock coil and resistor wire. Ford 6 cylinders take their model # 1261 I put 1 in my 70 yesterday - took all of about 3 minutes to install.
Yeah, but I wanted the II because it will let me sit with the key on so I can listen to the radio or whatever. It's not important really, but It'd be nice.
Yup, that is the right kit. BTW, if you want try to look it up on ebay. The pertronix there seem to sell about $20 cheaper brand new. and you're right. IIRC the Pertronix 1 will fry if you keep the key in whereas the 2 was made to counter this. That and would it would be an upgrade over the two because it will burn and give more spark. I myself have a Pertronix 1 unit right now but maybe I will go ahead and buy either the DS2 kit from CI or their DUI.
Can't you leave the key on in the accesory position for the radio? That should not have any effect on the Pertronix, I would think. I have never burned up one, ever, and I have them in just about everything I own with points.
I'm just going by what I've heard. A lot of people have complained that the Pertronix burns out if you keep the key in the car without the engine actually being on. In other words, the Acc. option. From what I recall though, those people did not change the coil either which may have played a part but they never mentioned if it happened again because they would just get a new one from Pertronix for free and they reported just fine results afterwards. I haven't heard of any failures though from leaving the key in with the P2.
I was just thinking, originally I planned to upgrade the wires and battery too, but do you think I could get away with just the ignitor and the coil?
If you are going with the 2, I would upgrade the wires. Unless your current battery blows, there is no need. If you go with the ignitor 1, no need to upgrade either one.
Yeah, that's the dilemma I'm in. My battery is just fine. I just need 8mm wound core wires IIRC. I can safely get the wires and all the other stuff, but an optima is going to be too much it looks like.
IIRC, Pertronix does sell the entire kit with the wires in their website. But like I said, you should really consider looking on ebay for the Pertronix stuff. And btw, maybe it's just me but it seems as if the Pertronix kit is becoming something of the last electronic upgrade for some people. I've noticed they are going for other aftermarket options. Not saying they are bad, but maybe they are not as big as they used to be.
When it's in, Acc it's not sending power to the ignition...or the car would start. I have the 1, and I have left the key in the "Run" position for hours, and mines still working, after 3 years... When you just guess, or give advice on hearsay...it's never a good thing to do.
Yeah, that's really another reason why I put stuff up on the board first. Between my memory and others opinions it's hard to know what to do . Thanks for the clarification, Dave.
