So here's the scoop. My buddy and I were changing the condensor, the distributor cap and rotor, and the contact points. We pulled out the crankshaft and set it to fire off on one. After that it wouldn't start anymore. It was starting before but running rough. I used my old dusty chilton manual step by step but i just can't figure it out. Any tips or help would be appreciated. It's a 70' ford maverick with a staight 6.

My manual said for me to. It's an old chilton manual from the 70's. The shaft under the distributor body.

I had to point my rotor in the first firing position

So what were you tring to do? you were changing the cap rotor and points.... but you had to pull the crank shaft? doesnt make no sence to me unless your saying you pulled the distributor itself.

I seriously doubt he actually pulled the crankshaft out. Sounds like he just pulled the distributor.

I don't know why your manual told you to totally pull the distributor out, it was not needed for a simple tune up. Pull the cap off and verify that the rotor is pointing at #1 on the cap with the #1 piston at TDC on the power stroke. Double check your firing order. Make sure you're getting spark. When you get it running again, you'll need to reset your base timing. A timing light will be needed.

I was thinking he is talking about the oil pump shaft. He might have it 180 out not really sure it could be a lot of simple things

My bad, it wasn't the crank shaft. It was the distributor. We can't seem to get the rotor pointing at the first position without taking it out.

Then take it back out and put it back in correctly. You'll probably have to screw around with the oil pump shaft to get it to drop back in all the way.

Ok we got it running again but it's rough. Is there anything that we can use for the measuring on the contact points?

Well it's all installed. It's running rough though. Do I have to retune my engine?
