I was talking to an old guy at work (well a good bit older than me) today and he mentioned that the best car he ever had was a little blue 2 dr 70 Maverick that he bought brand new. I immediately told him that I had owned several Mavericks and still have my 70 so we started babbling about the cars. He told me how about all he ever did to his car was routine maintenance and ended up driving it up into the 80's and that he ended up racking up nearly 200,000 miles on the 6 cylinder/stick car and never had a break down. He said that the car still had some life in it but by around 1985 he had bought a new Ford truck and the car was just sitting under the carport rotting. He said a little neighborhood kid had been mowing his yard since he used to drag a push mower over behind a BMX bike and had been driving a Maverick around so he offered his little car to the boy for free. He told him that since he took such good car of his Maverick, he would like for him to have the little blue car just in case he ever needed any parts. And then it hit me....he had given me his car....I was that boy! Unfortunately the car was too rusty in the quarters for me to save at the time, but I did use many parts off of it on my cars and the front valance on my car now is off of his car so he was happy to hear part of his car would be back on the road soon. It was pretty neat to run into Mr. Thompson again after all of these years and had a great conversation. Made my day....but I wish I had kept those manual transmission pedals.
That's a pretty neat story, thank you for sharing it! My dad and my uncle previously owned my maverick so every now and again they'll tell me another story about it
Thanks guys...I hoped you might enjoy the story. I sure had a great time talking about it with him, especially after I made the connection. Thinking back on his car, it was way different than my 70 model. Mine was pastel blue...his was a darker shade of blue. Seems like the interior was a blue western vinyl if I remember correctly. Mine was plaid. The one thing that does stand out in my memory was that he had got the taillight panel painted white. I thought it looked weird but I guess he liked it. It was sort of the opposite of a Grabber being blacked out. If I had that car now, it would be worth fixing but back then...a free drivable 6 cylinder stick shift Mav with rusty quarters was just a parts car. It was cool that I made such an impression that he gave me the car. That means alot even if it was pretty well worthless back then.
neat story, I know what you mean about no value for restoring to them back then, I remember back in the 80's a guy down the street had a small bumper green maverick parked beside his house for years, had the little dog dish hubcaps and perfect body, one day it was gone, same time period a red stallion maverick was out in a field behind a trailerhouse on the way to my sisters house, I went looking for that car a few years back. trailer and car were both gone......sad
