I just bought a second Maverick. It has a vinyl top that is in excellent condition, but I really don't like the color. Does anyone know if these can be dyed another color? If so, what product would you recommend? I'd probably want to go with black.

Mar-Hyde has a vinal top dye that we have had good results with. The top has to be cleaned extremly well first and Mar-Hyde also has the cleaner for that. The dye comes in both spray cans and a mix you would need to use through a spray gun. The dye used with the spray gun is cheaper to use. You would need at least 3 or 4 cans if you go with the spray cans.

I have changed the color on several vinyl tops and had great success. I strongly suggest getting and using the mix for a paint gun as the spray cans work well on small areas but seem to streak a bit on large items.

It was suggested to me through a body shop supplier to use a good vinyl prep prior to dying the vinyl. It prepares the vinyl to be dyed and reduces the chance of problems after. You can get this stuff through any good body shop supplier.

Make sure that you REALLY scrub the top before you dye it also. A lot of crud gets into the crevasses of the grain and is hard to remove. If it isn't perfectly clean, it can effect the adhesion of the dye.

I agree with everything suggested above but I would stay away from the spray cans. The dye in the spray cans are reduced extremely thin and it takes more coats to cover it well, more than it would out of a spray gun. Like teecee said, you tend to get streaks which is mostly because you can't get a wide enough spray pattern and it dries very quickly.
