Lmao I think the guys at work are already tired of me talking about the car (and I'm containing myself!) but they're all sports nuts not car types anyway. It looks like a professional paint and body but whoever mixed the bondo either put in too much hardener or put it over loose paint (or both) so there are some small cracks in several places. All the trim is in the trunk along with new lights, light covers, weatherstripping (some), owners manuals, *factory* manuals etc. I'm having some issues determining if it's a 70 or a 71 as the door sticker is all but faded and I'm having problems deciphering the vin. Drums still all around, power steering still in place, new steering column but I don't think it's hooked up completelyvto the transmission... There a lot to do but we went over as much as we could see (without getting muddy) and didn't see any rust which us a big one for me. Both front seats are from another car (originally black vinyl interior, now with cloth bucket seats lol), the headliner is in great shape, everything's there. The PO put a shiny new exhaust on it (stock intake/headers though) which I hope to keep at least partially when I (or the Dude) do a V8 swap. Omg I could go on and on. The more I think about it I don't even mind the wimpyass motor. Maybe just find a 250 and leave it I6 as my commute car. Can't help but wonder how many MPGs it gets, especially with the 1bbl and those wide rear tires. *stops to breathe* Yeah. I'm excited. Can you tell? Still want that V8 Comet but this one makes me happy. Now to just read up on the I6 motors.
I had it pictured looking different too. Frankly I wasn't sure what I'd be walking into but I knew I wanted one of these cars and had the cash in my hand. Immediately when I saw it I knew I needed it though. It's solid, has a lot of things I wanted to get eventually anyway (like the $500 new wiring harness and the rims) and looks good. A bit of body work and slaving over the wiring harness will have this being my commuter car. Now to just figure out how to get A/C (it gets over 100 degrees around here come summer). At least the windows roll down! (mostly)
This morning I checked on the status of my loan and saw it had been approved (wahoo!!!!); still need to wait for it to be deposited (hopefully tomorrrow) then I'm going to try one last time for that Comet V8 granny car. Our (the owner's and mine/Dude's) schedules haven't lined up but he's supposedly off the next two days and if he'll answer texts and messages (and my $$ deposits) then I or the Dude will rush down and snag it. If that works then I get the Comet and Dude gets his Maverick; if not, then I'm going to turn my time and money into the Maverick and get that little I6 going. All waiting on the cash. It's a government check that's in the "mail" and their speed is iffy sometimes so we shall see, but I'm crossing everything I can that the money is deposited today or tomorrow.
Question, is it possible to tell whether a car is a 70 or a 69.5 from the VIN? OK91T175606 I'm going to try and upload a few more pictures tonight but the question about it's actual year was asked and I don't know. The ignition was hanging by wires and the column has been changed out so I'm not sure where it (the ignition) was originally located. We've been working on wiring issues, steering column snafu's (according to the PO they used a GMC column and made it work with "minor" modifications but it won't go into Park) and carb work. There's a few linkages I can't figure out what they're for but I guess that's par for the course. Hopefully they won't be terribly hard to fix or replace if necesary.
Alright!!! I'm SOO happy to see another female on here that is as excited as I am about these cars! Great Great Great! Not that you guys aren't Fantastic, because you are! Can't wait to see more pics. Keep em coming. Mine is about to be on the road as my daily driver in about 2 weeks time. Just putting some final touches on the engine to make it just right. Can't wait to get A/C either...gets hot down here too. Not to excited about summer...
Yay estrogen!! I hear you on A/C, it gets easily into the 100s around here and while I've done the no-AC thing before I really really hated it. I'm inquiring about another car, a 74 Comet V8, that I'm hoping has all options INCLUDING the AC. But yay for chicks who dig classic cars!!!
True true about chicks who love classics! I was scared to death of cars before , but when my last car needed to be fixed I thought "this is bull. I could totally fix this!" The next thing I knew I had a bunch of new tools, had bought a nonrunning mav, and was officially hooked! Or as I should probably say*coff coff* "my names Amy, and I'm a classicaholic. And no I'm not ready to accept assistance to combat this tragic illness. I'm pretty sure it will be the death of me and i've exepted that! Good luck gettin that v8. That be great to have that power. I'm runnin the 250 right now. I have to say this six is the smoothest running engine I've ever had. Great deal on the cars your getting to! Can't wait to see what your gonna do with which ever you go with. I'm looking for a 5 lug for the back so I can get rims on there. I've decided to go with 17 inch. I'm going with a mod/custom look. I better stop there... Could talk all day about this lmao.
Oh girl don't get ME started!!! My coworkers, all guys, are already tired of me talking about my car! It's not that I'm bragging or anything, I'm just excited!! The two Comets I'm looking into are both V8s which is what I originally wanted - I was just seduced by what I saw with my current vehicle (aggressive stance, 8.8 rear w/ leaf springs, nice rims, small 70 bumpers etc). My first choice in cars is being decidedly non-communicative (the 71 Comet V8) - I've left a few messages and texted him but he only responds when he feels like it. Tomorrow I give him an ultimatum about the purchase then if I don't hear from him in a day I'll move on to the other Comet option (74 V8, and this one RUNS!). But GAH, I'm so excited to start working on it!! The blue one has a lot of wiring issues to take care of (the PO jacked up all electrical trying to install a new wiring harness) and I need a commuter car now as my leased car miles are about to run out. First up is fixing all hoses, shocks, brakes and dilapitated rubber bits to get it safe, then a new aluminum radiator, thermostat (as the V8s run hot even in cool weather), new carb and intake (Edelbrock most likely) - after that we'll see where my budget allows me to go. Haha see, I knew I shouldn't have let myself get started! So many ideas, so very little (relatively speaking) budget!! But I'm excited (can you tell?) and can't wait to be driving this baby around. I love the look of these cars - they're simply awesome!!!
So I may have fallen into a most excellent opportunity but don't want to jinx it by talking about it. Suffice to say I'm definitely getting the V8 I wanted, it just remains to be seen which direction I go in getting it. The Dude, therefore, is probably going to take over the 70 Maverick; if you see anyone with the login "Ludo"-something coming around the boards, that's him. He's excited to get into it, although I think he wanted the V8 too lol Exciting times. Can't wait to dig into my car (wherever it comes from)!!
Wahoo we got it started!!! The Dude made sense of the wiring harness and this afternoon we got her started! The drive belt is coming apart and spewing bits whenever rev the engine and the motor needs to be bolted down a bit more, but it idles perfectly and sounds AWESOME with those pipes! Sure doesn't sound like a six to me - I think I may regret letting this one go to The Dude eventually. I've gone over this thing with a fine tunes comb, even checking the hood lip: there is NO rust. Gah. It's not a perfect body (it already had some restoring done with bondo and a new paint job that's cracking from age and exposure in places) but just, wow. Wish I wasn't so hung up on the whole V8 thing, but there you are. Plus I need something that already runs so I can build while I use it. As a daily driver, my current I6 isn't quite there yet!
