Guide me... I am using a plate to run a 4bbl on my 2bbl intake. What hoses and lines go where? Its a stock 2bbl going to a stock Holley 4bbl out of a Mustang(580-600cfm) Pictures and details would be awesome and if you could make it simple like a coloringbook I'd be most grateful. I have 2 days...
Sooo I have all those lines and stuff already? I am wary of this swap considering the car already runs fine(except for the carb needs rebuilt) so I figured I could do this and then drive it while I take the time and rebuild the 2bble to as-new condition.
Its fairly simple..here's what i did. Hooked up the pvc(the one on you valve cover) hose to the port that is labeled "Power Brakes". Then hook the vacuum advance hose from your distributor to the "timed spark" port that is in the front metering block. and last but not least connect the fuel line to the front fuel bowl. Its going to be on the top driver side of your carb.
when i went from my 2bbl to my holley i didn't need to add anything all the lines and stuff were there...even the throttle linkage fit's perfectly!
Um...look what I found...that can't be good right? 4 barrel installed but running rich(of course) I adjusted all the screws out then in just a little. It makes black smoke still so it must need further adjustment...maybe. It idles in park at around 1100 and in gear around 900-950. the darned electric choke...it has two plugs, positive and negative. My original only had one plug. It is also harder to start but it eventually turns on. I retarded the timing a little also(turned the distributor counter clockwise about 1/8 inch or so).
Best thing you could do is either rebuild the 2v or put a 4v intake and carb on there. If you are saying you need the car and don't have the time to rebuild the 2v carb. then that I understand. Where are you in NC. I am just north of Charlotte. off I77. I don't have a 4v intake for a 302 anymore but I can rebuild the 2v carb for you easy enough. Just bring a kit and a gallon of cleaner. Glad to help anyway I can. Home 24-7 clint
2bbl back on. It ran so rich that I used a 1/4 tank just trying to adjust it. I reinstalled the 2bbl without the burnt plate and the engine sort of pulses. I have everything hooked up correctly and the timing reset so...I dunno.
You adjusted the idle screws ass-backwards. You go all the way in, then out 1-1/2 turns to start with. Then fine tune it with em after you've got the timing and idle speed where you want it. Just me, but you could have completely removed the electric choke from it. The burnt out spacer was your problem, you had a massive vacuum leak there. If you want a non EGR spacer, I have three extras----send me $10 and I'll send you one.
I turned the screws all the way in and then out a little. The screws on either side of the front box that is. I must've misposted. it ran but was difficult to start and ran so rich the exhaust was nauseating. I'm running no spacer now...runs okay but pulses.
Pulsation (surgeing) is due to a too rich/lean condition or incorrect timeing(among other things) But these are the obvious ones considering... Reset your timeing to where it belongs then adjust the carb...Turn mixture screws in till they stop (dont sinch em down) turn em out 1 1/2 turns. Start car, run it up to operating temp. Once warm adjust for lowest possible smooth curb idle (in park) adjust mixture screws for best idle (idle will come up as you turn em out and fall off if you go too far) then reset curb idle with car in drive to 800 RPM You can then play from there till you get the behavior you seek...Good luck!
I did all that. The 4bbl dripped a lot of gas into the venturi even after the car was turned off. It kept dripping. Flooding my engine and I was risking burning the internals if i didn't switch back. I can't ruin my car it's all I have. It runs then revs...runs fine then revs. Every 30 seconds to a minute it will rev.
Sounds like float was set wrong on the 4bbl(too high) causing it to burp fuel into the carb, may have float issue with the 2bbl as well (too low) I was referring to the 2 bbl once re-installed with the proceedure I posted for you Paint Tank. Putting a 4 bbl on a 2bbl to 4bbl adaptor brings a few issues to the game...Your better off with the 2bbl till you can get a 4bbl intake.
