I was doing a decent speed on the highway (5k rpms in 3rd gear, so do the math (y)), and thought to myself "I haven't lubed these new u-joints yet!?:yikes:

I did about 5 miles cruising around town, then filled up the gas tank, and did about 10 on the highway.

Do you guys think the u-joints are shot already?

They have the lube from how they ship out, but I never had the grease needle until later and just remembered that I hadn't used it yet.

If they are new u-joints, you shouldn't have to lube them for a long time. Many aren't even grease-able.

These have the hole in one end cap to lube them through. They were new. But usually I lube them as soon as I install them, but I didn't have the needle yet.

    So I should be OK?

There is a hole in the bearing cap to lube it? Never seen one like that. I've had some with zerks in the cross-piece before but that's it.

Yeah, it has a hole in one of the caps. I had to buy a needle-type adapter to fit on my grease gun to lube it up. I will do it when the exhaust cools down, probably cool enough to do it now. It has been half hour or so since I got home.

Wow, that's interesting. I've got a needle I bought for greasing stuff without zerks through the boots.

I did the exact same thing to my U joints right after putting them in. Had the car down for a few days while I did front suspension work, converted over to disc brakes, and a number of other things. Went for like a 20 mile ride around town when I was done, and then as I was cruising along about 70 mph down the highway enjoying the new found smoothness of the car, it hit me that I hadn't greased the U joints. :slap: Greased them up immediately when I got home. That was 80,000 miles ago.

I have some with the fitting on the cap end also. I suggest changing out the zerk to a regular type. That needle adaptor probobly won't allow enough pressure to push grease through the other caps. Even with the regular fitting grease will try and come out of the boot/skirt on the cap with the zerk. I have found I have to add the grease by sudden strokes of the pump. Watch for the grease to come out of all 4 skirts.
This isn't on just mine either. Used to see and do this at Pep Boys also.
