ok here is what happened i have been re plumbing my engine and one of my carburetor bolts on my intake manifold snapped off flush with the top of the flange so i went to drill it out and before i noticed it the bit slide to the side and know i have a whole that is way to wide for me to thread and is way out of line for my carb to even bolt down to on that hole... so can i still run it with only 3 bolts holding the carb down or do i now have to get a new intake????? its a 4 barrel and its the back passenger side hole just to add didnt know if that would make a difference or not
i dont know much about them just looked at the link but like the hole is know about 3/16th of an inch out of the way for a bolt to even do into
normally you could drill it out and put a plug, Keensert, or a Time-sert in it then redrill the original hole in the stock location. If you dont know what a Keensert is here you go http://alcoafastener.thomasnet.com/category/keenserts-reg-?&plpver=10&bc=3001584 The Keensert has four tangs (called "Kees") on it at even 90 degree spacing; the final step is to force these Kees vertically down across the threads of the tapped hole, breaking the threads and making it impossible for the Keenserts to unscrew themselves. It is still possible to drill out the Keensert and reinstall a new one at a 45 degree angle from the original installation, with the new Kees being forced down in the spaces between where the old ones broke the original threads. One nice benefit of Keenserts is that they can be installed at a location where a tapped hole has worn out or a helicoil has become damaged and cannot be easily removed, because a significantly larger hole is drilled for the Keensert and the original hole geometry ceases to be a concern. http://www.timesert.com/ timeserts are similar to Keenserts but they dont have the locking tangs
so yea i need to just get a new one then like the hole is like i said more than 3/16th out of line for a bolt to go from the carb into it... it is aluminum so the easiest thing for me to do just so i dont mess it up anymore is just to buy a new one
Did you get the broken part out...? If so I would JB Weld a threaded stud into the hole at the correct spot and use a nut to hold down that corner. I'm so cheap. It's a sickness how cheap I am.
no i didnt drill it all the way out because it slide side ways and i got about a quarter inch down and then i stoped and saw that i screwed it up .
Can you take a picture by chance? I'm having a hard time believing that the damage is bad enough for a new intake manifold by simply trying to drill out the broken stud and the drill bit slipping.
If your near a machine shop they may can repair the unit. At least you cud inquire. You want to get the new hole straight, and they can tapp it for the carb stud. It's hard if not impossible to get it straight w/ a hand drill.
tap the hole with threads. take a grade 5 bolt and screw it into the hole with red locktite on it. cut the bolt off so the remaining stud is flush with the top of the manifold. now put the carb on. center punch where the new hole needs to be. now you can drill the larger grade 5 bolt out and tap it.
