started up my car today after replacing the "broken" temperature guage that wasnt reading right and hit 230 on temp guage FAST!. figure i didnt have enough coolant since i was going up hill? mabey the collant slid and hit the sender? so i went home and topped it off (didnt look low at all) i let it run with the cap off for about 30 minutes, looked outside and smoke was building, ran over real quick and my temp was pusling from 195 to 210 to 190 and repeats this so i threw in a working 180 thermostate replacing the new one and it was still that high!. threw the cap on and watched it drop 20 degrees (180) so i thought i was good. got to the gas station and was running 140 so i got on the freeway, hit 70, looked down at the guage and the temp hit 245 as a coasted to the side shutting off the car. let it cool down drive it all the way to the tech school where my old teacher mentioned the waterpump, told him its not electric and it spins off the belt. mabey i had too much water with the anti freeze? im starting fresh in a couple of hours. i cant make it 10 feet without hitting over 200 i have been running the motor like this for a week!!!! and didnt know!!!! any ideas?
Water absorbs heat better than antifreeze. Maybe you have air in the system. Did you drill a 1/8" vent hole in the T-stat?
I never thought to take a picture. Drill a small burp hole in the thermostat...not the housing. Have the hole at 12 o'clock when installed.
how should the hose look if its collapsed (dont say "it should look collapsed!") where do i get these fansy springs?
squeeze the bottom hose with your hand, if it closes to kinked in your hand there is no spring. also when it is hot and motor is running, squeeze the top hose and see if it is hard as a rock, if it is your t-stat is not opening.
...flat... You can watch it collapse when you rev the engine. I never threw mine away, they are reuseable. Scroll to bottom of page http://www.accufabracing.com/ford_gt.htm
if the tstat is open the top hose will be squishy but liquid filled, if it is hard as a rock it is not allowing any coolant through. somewhat opposite for the bottom hose. it should be lightly squishy then hard when you close on the spring that keeps it from collapsing. if it has no spring and collapses then its like a garden hose with a kink.... hope that helps...
antifreeze doesnt help with cooling. thats why you mix it with water. if you run streight water you will get alot beter cooling ability than the mix. you need the antifreeze to lower the freezing point and the boiling point of the water and also to lubricate the water pump. read the back of the antifreeze bottle to determine how to correctly mix for your climate. did you just change your heads? if so if you put a head gasket on upside down it will cause the symptoms that you are describing.
is their actually a left and right side of the gasket? i just put the FRONT word torward the FRONT, dont tell me the idiot at advance auto gave me the wrong one... any who, new antifreeze worked
