The gas tank sending unit is bad on my 74 Mav...finding one has been difficult to say the least. I was wondering if there was one from another Ford product that could be used, or if anybody knows a source for good sending units. It's my understanding that this is a common Ford problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I would go to a Junk Yard, I had a very bad experience with an Auto Krafters Sending Unit that leaked fuel all over my garage floor. The area around where the gauge plugs in was where it leaked they aren't made right IMO. I dunno if they're all that way maybe I just had bad luck but I really would try a Junk Yard or a Ford Recycling Yard first. I wish the local Auto Parts stores stocked OEM Sending Units but I guess they're not a popular enough item.

As for it being a common Ford problem this is the first i've heard of that. Not saying sending units don't go bad with the new fuels they have out today anything is possible. It turns out my original sending unit wasn't bad at all I thought it was cause I was getting false gauge readings telling me I had 1/4 tank when my car was out of gas. It turns out it was the Instrument Cluster Regulator causing the whole problem and not the sending unit at all. I did send the unit back to Auto Krafters and got In-store credit :).

Maby it was your "O" ring seal that was causing the leak. They are still available from Ford and I highly recommend using a new one every time you install a sending unit.

I know that the float is the same as a Pinto, not sure if the sending unit is the same though. (I had an old Pinto gas tank laying around that had a good float in it that I used once).

If you mean the gasket that wasn't it. I used the new one that came with the unit and I even applied some sealant to it to seat it properly cause of the angle I was working with I couldn't just set it in there. I had done the same with my old unit and it never leaked. The leak was coming from the plug gas was trickling down the prongs when it first happened the gauge was still plugged in and this was causing the gas gauge to trip out big time. Apparently the plug got jolted and because there wasn't any sealant on the underside of it (like on the OEM Unit) gas began to seap through. The Gas gauge trippin was the first indication something was wrong, the fuel odor that soon accompanied it was the second.

hearing all this, now i know why i bought my last mav. (76). i needed a tank and straps for my (77). it has a (74) tank in it. the guy threw the old tank and sending unit away. looks like i have less in the car than a tank, straps and sending unit cost....frank...
