The Carter 1 bbl on a '74 250 I6 Maverick... the accelerator pump in the front fuel bowl of the carb, seems to be ass backwards from other carbs I've seen. When I press the throttle, a fork moves down the pump rod, and a spring pushes the rod down. Letting off the throttle, pulles the rod back out. Is this right? My problem is that it seems that when I press the throttle, the pump rod moves down VERY SLOWLY. Like, I'm not getting gas from it. If I press it down, with the throttle down, it'll squirt gas... Question is - do I need to do something to make that spring push the pump rod down faster/harder?
thats exactly right..what you described, is labled as a "fuel pump", as it poth pumps fuel into the bowl and into the rest of the carb..making it push faster/harder will make your carb flood badly...
eh... well, as it stands, I can't get the car to start. It refuses to run, even when I put gas down the throat of the carb. I had thought that perhaps the carb wasn't getting any fuel. *sigh* Ok, I'll pull it back apart, and see what I can do.
you oughtta rent a timing light and check out your timing..its real simple, only 1 bolt on the dist. exactly how slow is it going down?? cause it could ave fuel/air stuck in the pump shaft..
Um... it's almost not going down, then it goes VERY slowly. Like... 5-7 seconds from top to bottom... I've got a timing light, I'll check that out. I gotta find out about the vacuum advance still, tho..
FWIW I've rebuilt my carb for the same reason, because it seemed like the accelerator pump was extremely sluggish. The rebuild made no difference in this respect. I have been able to get the engine to start and run fairly evenly with some tweaking of idle speed/mixture, but it still seems odd to me that there isn't more travel in the pump.
did you by any chance put a little oil on the pump shaft ring?? you are supposed to, but the instructions are quite lacking..you can use a tad bit of extremely low weight motor oil, but any oil will do..even extra virgin olive. but if i were you I'd go with the motor oil...but a VERY SMALL amount....very very small. otherwise, the ring can get damaged..also, you should do the same with the little diaphram on the pushrod under that brass cap you pulled..
Ahh, the Carter RBS. This is it's biggest drawback. Oiling the accel pump arm/shaft is the best solution. Some white litium spray might help without tearing it apart. OTOH, sometimes it's just best to go to the parts store and get one that's been redone by Holley with a warranty on it...
