i am removing the tank and putting in a fuel cell, and want to keep the stock steerhead cap, but unless I get some suggestions, I will have to cut the tube off the filler tube so I have that screw-in plate in the back to mount my cap.

Is this replaceable, and in production, or would cutting this up be a sin?

If so, what suggestions for mounting that cap on the back so I am not ruining a needed part?

Common parts used on all Mavs/Comets, I don't think they would be hard to find if you needed another one....

As long as it uses the same 5 screw holes and my maverick cap will fit, I will trade mine for someone else's. I may also weld in the cap with a single small tack to keep thieves from getting at it, but allowing me to remove it later if I needed to.

All I need is the plate that screws to the car and allows the cap to screw on.

Another idea might be to tack a strap to the cap with a hole in it that a bolt loosely fits through. Weld another strap to the cut-off neck. Then use a wing nut to secure it from inside the trunk. Once the cap is turned into place, that would make it very difficult to unseat. If a thief did succeed at that, then it should just turn a lot ... big time waster.

This is a lot like how Cragar used to secure center caps in SS wheels to keep them from getting ripped off.

    Hmmm. good idea Capt! (y)

Mainly, I don't want myself, or someone else who might later drive the car, take that cap off and fill the trunk with gasoline...:rofl2:

I used that location to mount my battery shut off switch. I cut out a disk of aluminum the diameter of the fill neck mount flang and put the 5 mounting holes in it so it would bolt in to the stock mounting holes. Then I mounted the switch there. I'll post a pic later
