i believe there is a tech thread on this. theres a few different ways i've tried. nothing better than a cap or a nice pad though.

I have done something almost like that before. It is how I redid my granada console(and it is how I am going to redo my side pannels for the back seat and the dash pad when the weather gets warm again). You use expanding foam or something like that to fill in the cracks and sand/cut it all smooth (make sure you take a razor blade and cut the high spots off before you put the foam on) then you go out and find that foam backed vinyl, I think it is marine vinyl, then remove the foam backing from it (by soaking it with MEK, the foam will just pull off after 20 or 30 seconds just start at one corner and work 5 or 6 inches at a time or else you will tear holes in the vinyl) and then using a heat gun and spray on adhesive you wrap/stretch it around your dashpad.

A guy I know in high school cut down the high spots and then did a thin layer of fiber glass followed by paint. It's not the way I would go but it worked and looked good.

Yep you guys get the rotten interiors and we had the rotten bodies. Wonder how many rusty Mavs up here got crushed with nice interiors.

Mine is an absolute piece of crap. I tried to get vinyl to stick. it wouldn't. I ended up with sheet metal screws holding the loose parts to keep them from flapping. I cap is in my future.

Did you remove the foam backing and clean the surface so it would adhere to it properly?

I agree, we have solid bodies (the cars that are from this area) and the interior gets dried out by the sun and heat. I have to say I would much rather do interior that rust repair, that said here I sit with a car that came from out of state and has rust issues!!!
