Door pull/armrest clips - which way?

    I am reinstalling a set of interior driver and passenger door pull/arm rests.
    This requires me to insert a set of (2) retainer clips (which the screws mount into) into 2 square holes in the door.
    The clips are keyed/notched and I'm not sure which direction the notch on the clips should face:
    1) pointing towards the hinges
    2) pointing towards the outside edge of the door
    3) doesn't matter.

    Are you talking about these? (circled in white in this picture) I can help you, I have my doors halfway apart right now and millions of pictures of the clips.
