Hello All, I've been jumping on this site after recently acquiring a '76 2 door Comet. I got it running correctly with everyone's knowledge about these vehicles. Electrical and fuel issues resolved. It's got a 250 C4 trans auto. I'm not going to do much just maybe put on a 2 barrel carb, and a Flowmaster or cherry on it. and o yeah most importantly changing to smaller '70-'72 bumpers, Mav hood and grill. ( just picked up a fiberglass one on CL for $35!) I'm glad this site is here to serve a novice like myself one day I hope to give advise on my experience with my Comet. I got two weeks vacation and plan on spending it in the garage getting it ready for the summer. Dam those Brazilian Mavs are awesome! Happy Holidays to all from Chicago!
You should post pics. What did you get that is fiberglass? Hood? Would like to see pics of it if it is fiberglass. I have an L88 scoop I want to put on a hood I have but been thinking maybe a fiberglass hood would be better for that.
Here is the link of the guy I got the hood off of. He explains everything in the add. I just placed the fiberglass hood over the comet one and all seems to match up. He just did a poor job of cutting it straight. He said I would just have to measure with a straight edge and reduce the areas he cut unevenly. I'm just worried he cut too much into the hood area. Is there a way to make up for whatever he might of cut into the hood? It's hard to tell with out measuring. Another concern I have is that the under part doesnt have any kind of support. I'm worried it might not be sturdy enough. He said it was strong enough just to place 4 pins and remove the hood hinges (The ones that open the original hood) I'm not very handy with body mods but I'll give it a test fit tomorrow and see. Link been deleted. I can't think of any way I would want to add to the hood. I also wouldn't want to have 4 pins, just 2. The hinges on our cars don't have springs so there isn't any pressure to be concerned with. If it's too flimsy for our kind of hinges I would be upset. There is probobly a way to stiffen it, but it wouldn't be in the origional production so no telling how well it would work or last. Keep us posted.
Your right it is to flimsy on the top closer to the hinges . It would need stiffing for sure I took a closer look today. the other end is fine. the underside of the hood does not have any kind of structural support either. I'm not worried about it $35 bucks is cheap he also sold me a nice bran new cowl with 3m tape for $20 bucks. I'll probably spray paint the hood real nice and hang it in my garage as wall art. if anyone is interested I'll take the $35 I paid for it if not its wall art. Here is the add. Ford Maverick Fiberglass Hood - $35 (Aurora) Date: 2009-12-20, 9:28AM CST Reply to: sale-qhr8v-1518284169@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] This is a new fiberglass hood for a Ford Maverick that was removed from a one piece fiberglass front end. It is the hood section only and does not include the cowl section. It measures 43 3/4" wide at the front fold down and 46 7/8" at the rear cowl. Length is 52" down the center and 46 7/8" on the sides. I will NOT ship this item. Local only.
Sorry Blugene I'm turning my Comet into a Maverick. Just looks better to me especially the 70 to 72 models. Just finished taking off the huge front bumper. The rear was already taken off by the previous guy. He got so desperate he used a saw saw to take it off! I'll post pics asap just can't find the usb cable. Some history on the car: It's from the Midwest but looks like it was kept covered up. I has rust on the usual rear wells. Floors and doors are solid 57,000 miles looks to be original. Has all the stickers inside the engine bay. Original AM radio everything works even the cigarette lighter! Took me about 20 minutes to take the front bumpers off without a problem. If anyone is in need of a 76 front bumper send me a message. I'm having a great time working on it. It runs great I can't wait to get the small bumpers on so I could drive it on the street! If you have some on sale with the brackets let me know.
