has anyone bypassed the ignition module on the fire wall?? anyone have ideas? hate this thing and want it gone... or if you have a73 wiring harness for under the hood and under the dash let me know..thanks yergntiger93@yahoo.com whats the purpose of this frickin thing?
why do you hate it? without the ignition module your car will not run without putting another form of ignition on it.
ok here is the deal..helping the boy with his mav..the harness in his 73 didnt have all of this box n crap on it..a red fueable link wire behind the speedometer cluster would get hot while the car was running(took only about 15-20 sec) (this only happened when the car was running, not with the ignition switch on) so in a brief moment of infinate wisdom we pulled the wiring out of the 73 and used a harness out of a 74..now this would have worked great except the module was not with the harness and the car already had the billit distributer and msd coil..so now im wishing there was a way to bypass the box and continue on...or find a loving sole that has had the experience of blood running from his head hands and finger and the experience of having a teenaged son that knows everything about the car except anything,,,help me out by finding me another v-8 ac/wiring harness for the car...dont want to sound like i dont like the mav it just get discouraging when it comes to finding parts..hope you all understand...73 harness anyone??anyone?
is it possible to run the updated billit distributer with this module? if so anyone have a preference? what exactally does this do? just trying to figure this all out ..i greatly appreciate all the help
the 73 would be points ignition thats why it didnt have the module. Around 74 is when these cars started getting electronic ignition. By 75 it was standard.
what distributor is in the car? I know you said billet but does it have a intergated module in it? if so you can do away with the duraspark box
ok, you can get rid of that box with out having to change out the harness. you will need some sort of box to work with the msd distrbutor. there are two ways that i would go with this if i were you. first way is get a msd box and use it. the other way is change the distrbutor out for one a points one, the replace the points with a pertronics. there are also several aftermarket distrbutors that dont need and external ignition box. what you do is up to you. you can also locate the stock duraspark box some where else if you want.
i guess what im asking is what do all of the wires that plug into the module go to? the ignition system i currently have on the car was simunlar to a 72 in the aspect that it had coil and distributer only..mine has the new updatedd distributer w/o points..so do i have to use all the wires going to the module or can i just splice into them and run the new distributer? will that interfer with other electronics in the car? if i can i will just weed the unwanted wires out of the ewiring loom and go on..anyone know what the wires go to and can they be spliced into?
by the way if i was not clear ...the distributer i currently have in the vehicle dosnt need the external box..
You can use a little GM HEI module with that distributor if it's got a magnetic pickup. Just get a 4-pin module and wire it up like this:
If it's the stock '73 type, that would be be because it's a points distributor. I'd rather run electronic ignition if it were me.
...But, yes, whether you run points or use the HEI or Pertronix, you can then snatch out the box and it's associated wiring and it won't hurt a thing.
