I only find the sticky stuff on the very bottom, and about 6" up the sides from the bottom.

I found, it was easiest to get your finger loaded up with it, then go all the way around sticking your finger to it, and it would pull off.
My green 73 had extra amounts, someone must have been having a bad day in Kansas when mine was being built.
    My 74 had none.

The 3m strips I referred to is butyl just not the thick ribbon style most are familiar with. And yes I have seen the sealer only have way up as well Craig.

I'll have to check the part numbers on the boxes of 3M strip-calk I have, and see if it's the same stuff.

Same here. It was up the sides about 6 inches and across the bottom. I used paint thinner and rags to clean it off. There was none in the gaskett just on the outter edges like what your describing. I have thought about not using any goo. Goo is not my friend and it likes to get on everything . Last thing I want is to find it got on my new headliner.

My '74 Grabber (Wayne car) had the goo all the way across the bottom and all the way up the sides on the pinch welds. None across the top.

mine had the goo all the way around and in plentifull amounts. it was a pain to remove. the first guy who reinstalled my windshield didnt use anything but the gasket. i didnt bother giveing him a second chance because he couldnt get the trim back on. i dont know if the second guy used any type of sealant but he did get the trim back on. the car is kept indoors and never sees the rain. ive been puting off washing it becasue i dont want to face the reality of it leaking again. perhaps ill give it a shot next time mo comes by so ill have a sholder to cry on.

So they are redoing it now. He's taken the trim off and is removing the old sealer he used which was "butyl" and is gonna seal it with some"primer" and put some "urethane" sealer on there.

No, and NO!! You don't need primer..and urethane is bad! Rubber gaskets need to flex with the car, urethane will not allow that to happen.

man, so disappointing! I was there from 3p-5p and this guy took out the old goo, put the primer on, put the urethane in and put the trim back on, tried pouring water on the car and it leaked pretty hefty, same as before, no different. Except now no water in the driver's side, just passenger. Then he goes back and puts silicone in all the creases. I mean I know nothing about cars and that seems rediculous to me. He put silicone on the overhead area in the cabin under the rubber! wth? Then he taped up the cowel and the wiper holes and poured water and still a ton of water came in.

    Ahhhhhh

It needs to be done like cjtorinoman said. It's too bad the glass shops don't know how to do the older cars any more. :(

Hey Mo, sounds terrible are you sure there is not a underlying problem any damage to the pinch weld that will not let the rubber portion lay flat. I have see this on older cars that installers pried the old windshield out and caused damage to the pinch weld area. Are you certain there is no cowl rust causing it? Where did the water come in at top or bottom? Tell you what ship me the car and I will install it guaranteed for free and I will supply all the materials including the gasket.......LOL sorry for jab trying to make you FEEL better. :dancing:CALL ME MY SHOP NUMBER IS 757-549-6665 Murphy's Automotive Restorations ....
