i have a edelbrock 1400 600 cfm carb and was wondering if i could put a different/better carb for more performance and what whould you recommend
That should be fine for a Performer intake and stock cam. I had the 1406 (600 cfm w/electric choke) and it performed well with a performer intake and slightly larger cam, and still performed well with GT40 heads and headers. Also got me 20 mpg on the highway if I kept my foot out of it.
This is the classic holley vs. Edelbrock argument. From my hands on experience, a holley will have a faster seat of the pants feel. I perfer the double pumper carbs, but even the vac. secondary carbs feel better than the edelbrock carbs. Don't over cfm the carb size. A 600 cfm carb is good up to around 6000cfm. Now let the argument comence.
I prefer a holley double pumper, and am currently using a 750 Street HP and LOVE it. but it would have been a slow beast on my stock engine and a gas guzzler. But for his current setup, I think he should be happy with what he has if it is running OK. And apparently it IS running OK, since he LITERALLY goes through rearends quicker than I buy underwear!!!
Ive got a Holly 600 cfm, 650 cfm double pumper holly and a eldb 750, Ive switched them around and hands down the 650 double pumper performs the best and gets the best milage, Its really apples and oranges depending on your setup though.
If your gonna pull more HP out of engine down the road,,,, stick with what you have! A good tune on carb probably get you some more kick for now. Buy your carb later to match the upgrades you've done to your engine if you go that route.
That is the best way to explain it Remember to get a stub stack for it it will give you a little better airflow through the carb. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/KNN-85-0700/ http://www.knfilters.com/Racing/stubstacks.htm
