Well i was with a freind at grandfathers house and we got to talkin about cars. i mentioned my mav. his grandfather asked me if my dash pad was cracked. i said yeah bad. well he took me out to his barn and pulled down a perfect black 1971 dash pad from a wrecked mav he pulled apart in 1974. he gave it to me. this thing is still soft like from the factory. i cant believe its in this good of shape. ill post some pics tomorrow.

Not sure what is the best way but I would treat it with something to keep it from cracking, mine was perfect when I bought the car for my daughter back in 92, she used a windshield cover at school (claimed to anyway) but while changing the oil on it about a year later I noticed a hair line crack in 2 places, they continued to get wider, ended up getting a dashcap which I am very happy with, still hurts to remember how nice the original was though

A dash cap is the best protection you can get for it especially if the car will be outdoors a lot. Keep the real one out of the sun as much as possible.

Stay away from armorall .. I use saddle soap on my dash pad and it keeps it nice and soft .. Cometized:)

I also agree with staying away from Armorall!

You're going to more than likely laugh at this, but the best thing I've found for keeping leather, vinyl, and plastics soft is...

    Murphy's Oil Soap!

Yep, the stuff for cleaning wood walls in your house. It's what the Caddy dealer told me to use on the '96 Deville Concourse and the leather is still soft in it! The oil in the soap puts back in the liquids that evaporate over time while it cleans.

Fair warning though, It smells like oranges in your car for a couple of days after using it and WILL KEEP YOU HUNGRY! :biglaugh:
