Swapped an `85 Mustang GT 5.0 (non-roller, cfi, we changed the intake manifold for an edelbrock 4 barrel) engine into the `73 maverick. Tried to bolt up the C4 this weekend, but the flexplate on the 5.0 is physically too large, and the bolt spacing on the torque converter is different. I am not sure of what balance the `85 engine is, but is it safe to assume I can take the original flexplate off the old `73 302 and get these to all work together? If not, any pointers to get a flexplate that will work right, or do I need to find an AOD and get the supporting mods to get that into the car also?
ah I think I get it, I need to pull the flexplate and check the stamping on the crank to determine the balance, then order a 157t flexplate for the c4. The one from the `85 must be a 164t for the AOD I just found a thread that shows the balance changed in `85...perfect
the 85 motor will be a 50 oz imbalance and is for an aod. your origanl flexplate is 28 oz. so you will need to order a 50oz one for a c4.
if its a maverick trans and not a mustang trans your going to have to get a 157 tooth 50 oz flex plate (which is not stock on a maverick) and it will go with the maverick stock torque converter i have an 80s block with 157 tooth 50 oz flex and didnt need to check the crank but im no motor head eather
Having issues, we ordered a 157t 50oz SFI rated flexplate from ebay, and the flexplate fits in the bellhousing, the torque converter bolts all line up, but I cannot snug the torque converter down to it, it hits the starter index plate, and the bellhousing has a 1/8" gap all the way around and I can't bring it together any tighter. The flexplate seems to have a 'bowl' shape to it that the stock one does not, any ideas?
DONT TIGHTEN IT ANYMORE!!! check and see if the torque converter is seated all the way, dont crack that trany!!! also see if the drain plug for the converter is in a hole.
all the cars I've built have been manual, this is my first time f'ing with an automatic as you can probably tell torque converter is flush to the flexplate, dish is towards the motor, maybe I should snap some pics.
