Ok.. thankfully i dont have to sell my 74 mav because i am getting a lil nissan pickup for free from my aunt. So now im home from college for a few months and i can actually work on my car, unlike before when i needed it every day for work and had no spare... with this comes questions 1. Paint remover... I was watchin "Ride with funk masta flex" on spike TV and they took a paste like material and rubbed it on the car and it instantly removed the paint when they used a razor. What is it!?!? 2. Paint for the interior plastics. Whats the best paint to use for all the kick panels and rear panels and dashboard... Spray paint? If so any "special" kind. Or any special methods to do it? 3. Emissions container... The thing in the picture below. I was told its not needed and to remove it, give me some more room. I never see them on any other mav's so i figured i could. But what about the hose the small red arrows poiints too? Does it need to be closed? Server any real purpose? http://home.comcast.net/~mattklaman/emission.jpg 4. In the pic below the lever is rusted stuck into position. (the lower part of picture... ) Been like that since i got it, never had problems. Whats it do, and is that even needed? http://home.comcast.net/~mattklaman/rustedshut.jpg Thanks in advance!
The "rusted shut" thing is the water valve for the heater. When working properly, it shuts the flow of hot water off to the heater core when you have the hot/cold lever turned all the way to "cold". Technically you don't need it...if it is stuck in the open position or you remove it entirely, the heater and A/C will still work. When it is working, it helps the system cool the interior of the car more efficiently by keeping the hot water out of the heater core when you don't need it.
Question 1: Its every day paint remover that you can buy at any WalMart, Home Depot, ...etc. Problem with it is you need to get every bit of it off or it will also lift your new paint. And I mean every bit!!!!. I never use it for that very reason. Question 3: You really should keep the emission canister. These cars vent all the gas vapor from the tank, up to this canister and then feed them to the carb. It robs no power. If you remove it, you will have fuel vapors comming out of the tube that's left over. You can trace the tube to the back, plug it up and put a vented gas cap on. I kept mine.
Mavmark, i dont have Ac, just Heat. So thats even more of a reason to remove it?!!? Also what about the hoses connected to it, whats running through them and what do i do about them? Thanks!
The same logic applies for non A/C cars..I didn't know they put that valve on non A/C cars though. Leaving it in (assuming it is working) should allow for cooler air when you have the heat-cold lever set all the way to cold. The larger hoses are for engine coolant. You could remove the valve and put one single hose in it's place. The smaller hose on the top is a vacuum hose and should be plugged.
