Does anybody know?I mean new which was more expensive a highly optioned grabber or a highly optioned comet gt. It seems like comets would be a bit more expensive. Just curious.. I think i am going over to the dark side and liking comets.
Mavericks generally had a lower base figure. It depended on which options were chosen as to which came up with the higher dollar figure. Some options were inexpensive. Others, like A/C, were pricey. It's all good. Mercury products, in general, were usually higher in price and fewer made. However, that does not make them more valuable. Demand dictates value, not price. Jim
If you're talking similarly optioned cars, brand new off the dealer's lot then the Comet GT would have been the more expensive one at the time because the Lincoln / Mercury vehicles were Ford's upscale vehicles while the Ford brand was focused more to the working class. If you're talking today's pricing, it's a crap shoot. It depends on what someone is looking for at the time and what has been done to the vehicle. A cosmetic restoration is going to bring less money than a full restoration, etc. I will go out on a limb here and say that I personally believe that out of two similarly optioned and restored vehicles, the Maverick is going to bring in more money just from brand recognition. -Scott H.
As new the Mercury line was a more luxurious type market. Usually more money. My Dad was a Mercury fan. I remember a Mercury Montego and my Favourite his Blue 76 Couger XR7. Had the half roof, what a nice car. He traded it in on a 78 Rabbit cause he couldnt afford the fuel anymore. The 72 Montego was a 351 Cleveland car that was his favourite car of all the ones he owned. You have to realize we came over from England in 74 so imagine the impact going from a Ford Cortina to a Montego.
I love my Maverick I really do. but if I had the chance to trade it in for a small bumper Comet GT, I would do it.
Comet GT new but now i say a Grabber or a Stallion and i love Comets better, but that's what i think.
I have an original magazine ad here (somewhere ... can't look for it now ...) for a 71 Comet GT and the price listed was in the $2800 range ... likely for a 6 cylinder. V8 added about $200 IIRC. Did a quick search online and one source quoted base price on a 73 Mav vs Comet, the Comet was $55 more, both in the $2400 range. It all seems so insignificant in light of today's prices, but family income back then might have been only $200 - $300/week, too. We were shocked that in 1971, my uncle special-ordered a loaded Mach I, had to wait 4 months for it to arrive, and had to pay - OMG - $4200 for it!!! Could have bought a Vette for $7000. Different times ...
I don't have one for Mercury, but my Ford Armchair Estimator, put out by Ford, says that a base 2 dr Maverick in 1972 was $2190, 4 dr was $2245, Grabber was $2359, and Sprint was a base $2377. The Sprint Mustang was a base $2942. The one I special ordered back in the Spring of '72 was around $4000 with tax. My gold '73 Mustang conv was $3854 + tax which included 10 gallons of gas for $4.00. That would have been for 93 octane gas, since regular back was 93 octane. Yes, indeed a different time. Jim
I had a chance to buy a Comet GT in the 80's for $700.00. Had original paint, factory slots, and a mild 302/c4. Still kick myself in the ass for that one!!
