So I decided to tackle my blinker cam after one year of having the part in my tool box. I thought I changed every the correct way but now the turn signals don't work at all. the reason I change it was because it wouldn't stay when signaling left, but it was working totally fine except for me having to hold it in place when signaling left.
sounds like you need to go back into the steering colum and see whats going on. are you useing ford blinker fluid or the cheap stuff from china?
I would personally get the ford Blinker fluid set up.The chineese fluid repair kit thing is lousey at best. RPS has em at a reasonable price.(its the whole T/S assembly, harness and all)
yup that china stuff is for the rice burners it's not strong enough for the fords you have to use the maid in the usa stuff !LOL!
the blinker fluid I use is from the best parts store in town and he said it's synthetic. I mainly used to get that extra 4-5 horsepower. I did paint it hot yellow though, so that's worth another 2 horsepower. So I actually did go back in and fully inspected the wires and everything looks tip top. Maybe they aren't making proper contact but I pushed the cam down and it seems to be seated properly so I can't figure out whats wrong with it.
Do yourself a favor and get a new switch. From Ford if possible. Those cheap repair kits are junk. Even repop switches can be a POS.
You need the one with the riveted on metal backing. I looked for years and never found one, then found a NOS on ebay for $40. Those replacement plastic one's either don't work, or will work on one turn signal and not the other. They are crap. Looking at the B/W pictures doesn't help me figure out which one you need. I would have to see them in person.
Craig, I don't think it was broken. The tab on the lower part was a little worn and loose so it wouldn't stay in place. But I think in retrospect I probably should have left it alone. So where can I find one? is the one from AK any better?
Here is the difference between the '71 and '74 Turn Signal Switch...the plug and the wires on the switch is different
