Pulled my engine out yesterday going to freashen the top end with new cam and intake and found I was driving a time bomb. Timing chain was baaad loose, timing gear was worn bad, all main bearings worn, rod bearings worn bad, one piston cracked, cam bearing coming apart(hope it didnt spin in block). The motor ran good with good oil pressure.. Looking like around $1300 dollar rebuild OUCH! I wasnt expecting to spend this kinda of money, but oh well at least I will know what I have when its done.

Yuck! atleast you found it before it went! That could have caused more damage. I'm in the same boat, I started this 5.0 build and the only thing i'm useing from the motor I bought is the block and crank! Everything else including all of the bolts will be new. Ohh well, It will be right when it finally come's together.:yup:

Dave; I have a 302 for sale. Has about 40K on it, but runs good and no issues that I know of. Call me if interested (770-363-3949).

if you were able to identify all that why not try rebuilding it yourself? do you have the resources to do so? might be a great experience

If you need new rods and pistons, why not consider a stroker kit? Or, even better, a roller block? Seems like an opportunity to have something better than stock for the same or less money.

Me and a buddy of mine are going to the rebuild. Going to have block bored (if it checks out ok), heads worked, reman. crankshaft, going with Comp. Cam Extreme Energy 268H cam kit and small stall converter.
It is alot money but me and my buddy had a ball yesterday tearing this thing apart reminded of us the times we had before wives and children. He has 72 Comet GT sitting in his shop waiting on its turn to be brought back from the dead. When I go backover to his shop I will try to get some pics of his car.

Good for you. I can relate to you and your buddy. I have a good friend who I spent most of my teenage hours with fixing and building cars. We dont see each other more than a few times a year now but when we do its like I've seen him every day. Was at his shop last week helping him on a van with a dead PCM. Just like old times. We work together almost without words. We are always on the same page and git er done then have a beer. Good times.

The 289 i had in a 56 f100 .I did a tear down for low oil pressure . I found 3 broken main caps ( no noise ) one complete set of rings ( 3 rings , 1 oil , 2 compression ) and not on the same piston all the rest were broken engine used 1 qt. of oil in 3000 miles flat cam 16 junk lifters 16 junk valves. The only thing I saved from that engine were bare heads , all the bolts valve covers , timing cover , oil pan, manifold ALL the rest was JUNK
