for a colume shifter... the rod that goes into the block is in the way trying to get them dang boots or caps or whatever off so i can move the linkage more trying to put on headers... any hints????
You typically cannot use headers with a column shift in part because of those linkages. So start shopping for a floor shifter. Then you can just cut those linkages away. I could never figure out how to get them to just snap apart for removal. I would like to hear how that is done.
There are a couple of tools. The most basic is like a mini version of a tie rod fork and then there is a more complicated little press that allows you to pull the joint apart or press it back together. There should be pictures in the Ford shop manual.

Column shifter I used a screw driver to pop mine out, but you have to get just the right angle. If you can find a shop manual that shows a tool, that would probably be better, especially if you can home brew the tool. I also had to cut the back tube on the header and move it over about one inch. I am also using headers for a 351W. Good luck! Lee
We must be talking about 2 different things. Are you saying you are gonna cut the linkage going to your steering? If so...how do you plan on steering you car?? Do you mean you're cutting the shifter linkage going to the column??
With the floor shifter in, shifting will occur by a cable, so you can remove all of the column shifter linkages and brackets. I see I have graciously earned a space in your signature. Thank you
