Wrap black tape around the mag pick up...it won't grab the sides so easy then.

If you get what ever is rattling out...will this fix the problem? Why not find out what went wrong and fix it before it cost you a pay check or two.

    Aha!... front u-joint is butchered.

Well, I never had THIS problem before...

The tinny chirping and rattling "from the tranny" looks like the front u joint is kaput. Never lost a u joint before, and never knew they made that weird noise when they're coming apart. That's why I never heard rattling idling in Park.

Thursday night I was driving home - hard on the gas then the car started to vibrate like crazy at 30 MPH. Crawled home at 25-30 (people on the highway were not impressed) and jacked up the rear - driveshaft and differential had about 10 to 15 degrees of slack and a huge "clunk" which I thought was the rear end since the rear u joint was tight, but when I took out the driveshaft it was actually the front u joint that is completely shot...

I'll get new joints tomorrow hopefully - which brings me to another question - how to check and fill the diff. with fluid. Anybody know before I degrease the diff?

there is a plug about half way up the chunk on the driveshaft side.

Yep! Those u joints will rattle your teeth. It's amazing how much slop you get when you turn it back & forth. At least it's a cheap & easy fix....

...so what was this from your 1st. post......

"Turns out there's something bouncing around behind the torque convertor.
Removed the lower shield and some areas of teeth on the driveplate are worn, removed the starter and the gear on it looks fine... but at least it lets me look at the edge of the torque converter behind the teeth and sure enough there are gouges everywhere."

LOL the gouges are probobly from trying to spin the converter with a screwdriver. Probobly nothing in there. Hopefuly.

    I ferget.

I think I was trying to figure out a noise in the first post:

Torque convertor... YADDA YADDA... noisy metal clunky bouncy... YADDA YADDA... trying to blow/suck/levitate an invisible piece of metal out from behind the gouged teeth... YADDA YADDA YADDA

So the torque convertor problem is relegated to the long list of things I need to do in the FUTURE :D

I replaced both u joints today (who said they were easy?... HAH... a 4" vise is not big enough to press them in easily. Took 3 hours just to remove, clean and change 'em). But they have grease nipples and only cost $50.

Road test is tomorrow after I inspect rear brakes and diff.

Road test will tell me if there is still any noise from the vicinity of the transmission.

It's suddenly FREAKIN COLD outside so I hope this is it...
