    Hey all,
Id like to introduce my self. My name is Jason Conser and I live in the Bay Area California. I dont have a Maverick...yet but am currently drooling on one I found for sale out here. Its a 1976 with only 78k original miles on it. It only has the straight 6 in it but if I wanted I hear its easy enough to swap out to the V-8.

Anyways my question is this. How mechanically sound are these cars? Do they constantly need work done on them? Also whats the horse power rating on this particular car and 0-60 time? Any info would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Jason

The car is actually already smogged as of about 4 months ago so no worries there for another year or so.

As far as condition cosmetically its good. Paint is a little lustless but thats ok it will get a repaint anyways considering its banana yellow LOL. Interior is in good condition as well I didnt see any rips in the faberic on the quick look over I gave it. I called him and asked him some questions about it. Its got all new fluids, new radiator, new shocks, new tires, new windsheild. It sounds like the guy takes care of it. He is askin $3,000 Ill offer $2,000 hoping I can get it for $2,500.

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like a nice car you're looking at!

How mechanically sound a vehicle is depends on how well it's taken care of.

If the vehicle is mechanically sound to begin with and you drive it with care, change the fluids, filters, and do the required maintenance on a regular basis it'll run well for a long time.

On the other hand if you beat on it constantly and hardly ever do any maintenance to it, it will leave you stranded beside the road when you least expect it.

Basically how long it will be dependable transportation depends on you.

As far as the rest of the questions, that depends on what size engine you have, if it's stock or modified, etc. There are just too many variables for me to answer the questions for you.

i know all about smoggin modified cars in california,i'd rather spend the day at a dentist with no pain killers befor i gotta do that again.if you do swap to a v8 it has to be from the same model year or newer and ALL emissions equiptment from the donor car car must be used.then it's off to the smog referee, who generally knows nothing.if you have to go back cause something was wrong and you get a different guy, well then its a whole new ball game.it will be different depending on who you get.then he runs an emissions test based on the donor car, then pressurizes the evap system and fuel tank.any leaks and you go home and come back to tardville to try again.should you get through those hoops he puts a smog referee sticker on the car so when you go to smog it EVERY year you get to point at it and explain the the smog shop what you've done and get them to go by the new tag on the car.some shops wont do the test because they are so afraid that they are doing something wrong and will lose there liscense.

here in cali i refuse to buy anymore cars between 76 and mid nineties when the computers eliminated alot of smog stuff.you can find a rust free car here in california on the cheap,i paid 500 for mine and a guy i know just picked up a 71 grabber clone for 900 and drove it 2 hours home.

as said the smog will make the v8 conversion a real pain. you should be able to find a 74 and older maverick in this great state that we live in, that will suit your needs. also $3000 seems to be alot. even 2000 for that car seems a bit much.

if you plan to keep it as a driver you will want to leave it the stock motor, if you want to make it a race only car you can drop in a v-8. or you could leave cali.....

How long will it be untill I no longer have to get it smogged? It cant be more then a few years can it? I looked around on craigslist there is only one other one for sale but its in oakland and its got 22inch rims on it. The owner says it needs some front end suspension work or somethin like that? Id rather pass on that one. LOL Its a 72 I belive.

Every so often Ca changes the last year for smog,It was originally suppose to be 30 years and older but with all the new regulations ( and its getting worse ) Who knows, According to Nevada California is running illeagle anyway and they are gonna have to change and go back pre 68, So i wouldnt wait around and expect Ca. to do something in your favor..
