Headers for 351W Mavericks?

  1. Do you think headers can be made where only shock tower mods are needed?

I've been in communication with a well known vendor that makes headers for older cars and some engine conversion applications. They have interest in making long tube headers specifically for the 351W conversion on Mavericks.

I need to know two things:

    1) For those who have made long tube headers fit the 351W Maverick and modified your shock towers (not go with a Mustang II front end), do you think it is possible that a set of headers can be made that would require only shock tower modification?

    2) If a set of headers was made that only the shock tower modification needed to be done to intall headers on a 351W in a Maverick, how many would be more willing to make that conversion?

terry, i have a set of headers that came on my car when i bought it that are long tube and need no mods to fit a 351w in a mav. i think there's a small ding in one tube if you count that. the real problem that i saw was trying to change the plugs without doing a shock tower mod.:)p.s. i have no idea what brand they are. nothing on them to indicate the manufacturer.

Left out a tiny, little detail.... :slap: ( I gotta get a new brain)

This vendor has interest in making 1 5/8 inch and 1 3/4 inch long tube headers and possibly 1 3/4 inch shorties....

If there is enough interest. :bananaman  (y)

definately definately definately. I want to go with a strong 351 now, and the headers are gonna be my biggest problem. I would definately want to see a production set that i dont have to fabricate or pay somebody to fabricate

    Terry,

I would be intersted in a set. I want my set up done like Don Graham's. I do not want to do shock tower mods. I want everything to look as much factory as possible. Let me know.

    Thanks

I made my own, they look just like the 6208 Hooker headers, except mine are longer (36-44" long...exit under the doors at a 45 deg. angle as to allow trans removal without touching the headers.). They require the shock tower mod. They're also 1 3/4" primaries.

The windsor will fit without shock tower mods...but usually you'll have to use spacers under the engine mounts to gain the required clearance, which raises the vehicles horizontal center of gravity (easier wheelie....crappy handling) and isn't so nice on the stock hood. As previously mentioned, plug changes are harder than a cadillac front drive V8. They weren't easy with the towers cut either, but not near as bad as it would be if they were still intact.

    Don,
Does your Mav not have shock tower mods? If so, how do you change plugs or have you done that, yet?

Any idea of the diameter of the header tubes?

i don't have any shock tower mods. as for changing the plugs i used a socket that i could get an open end wrench on. unfortunately i blew that motor up last year. i've gone back to a 302. i talked to a car builder from california last year about changing the front end out but never got to his place. he's in the process of moving a couple of blocks from my house here in az. the headers are out in the back shed. i'll try to get out there and see what size the tubes are.:)

Terry, with a 351W in a Mav or Comet the shock tower mod would be something that most owner who do thier own work would really need.
This weekend I went racing for the first time with the 6208 hookers and blew a header gasket (I guess I forgot to tighten the bolts) if I had not done the shock tower mod there would have been no way to repair the gasket at the track and continue to race.
If you can find someone who is willing to put in the time to make a temp plate of what it would take to get a set of either 1 5/8 or 1 3/4 long tube headers that reqiure little or no mods then he's going to make money either here or on eBay.
Most people don't have the time to make something like this happen, they can make money faster another way.

    Good luck.
