The gas tank in my 71 mav has some leaks in it. I found a tank from a 73 close by my house but was not sure if it will fit. So will a 73 mav gas tank fit in my 71?

If they want to much, you can get the 75 style new from Rock Auto for just over $100.

Hey Dave, I have a 1970 maverick. Can't find the 75 gas tank on rockauto. I see a 76. what will be the modifications needed? Just the screw length?

The 70 model is a whole different animal due to the fact it is a drop in tank. 71 and newer had a trunk floor and the tank bolts underneath. Sorry but no easy swap for the 70.

yup, same tank from 75-77. use longer bolts on the straps or longer straps themselves and it will bolt right in. i have one in my '71 ;)

I always wondered whether you could replace the trunk floor in a 70 with one from a 71+ car, probably the rear crossmember too (never looked up close), and use the later tank. Kind of a lot of work to replace a gas tank I suppose, but as hard as the 70 tanks are to find, I'd consider trying it if I had a 70.

You probably could but I think it would be easier to make a Mustang tank fit in there, especially if you have a metal brake. One day if I ever get back to the convertible project, I will see what it takes since its a 70 model.

Will the early Mustang tanks drop in?

Nope, I forget which was which but I think it was longer side to side and smaller front to back. It may be the opposite.

I'm checking on the tank measurements against the mustang options. My mechanic is contacting a place in Houston that specializes in fuel tanks for the chance of having one made.

Thanks and sorry about hijacking your thread.

So, the 75-77 tank will fit in the 71-74 with longer tank strap bolts, that's it? It's the same length and width, just a little deeper?

I just tried putting the 77 tank on my 71. the sender unit is the same, but the vent on top is different. I'm trying using some JB weld waterweld to fab it it place, but idk if it will create clearance issues or not. don't know about the bolt straps yet but I'll let you know after I try putting it up there. gotta figure out a way to fix my floats without buying a whole new sending unit too first.
