when i bought my car someone had already put cheap aftermarket autozone type mirrors on it with sheet metal screws.i've got original sport mirrors for it.i'm wondering if there is some sort of mounting bracket that goes inside the door to bolt or screw the original mirrors to.are they attached with sheet metal screws(i kinda doubt it but i dont have a clue) or is there some kind of plate on the inside or the door?thanx for the help.

Riv nuts or nut serts is what they are commonly called. They are threaded rivets,or rather nuts that are installed like rivets.Drill hole in door skin...install rivnut like a pop rivet. Attach mirror to rivnuts with appropriate screws.

the only downside to them is that they always come loose from the door upon removal so u have to end up sticking your hand up in the door to hold them in order to get the screw back out.... i hate them personally, lol

Devils in the details Bob.The little things sneak up on you with a "simple" paint job.A full restoration though...All heck breaks loose. Its nice to see the finished product though.Good luck!!!

You can install nutserts without the special tool by threading the bolt through a nut then the nutsert. Hold the nut with a wrench while tightening the bolt.

so drill the hole, put the rivnut in the hole then tighten the screw down and what, that spreads the rivnut kinda like a wall anchor?take the screw out and attach the mirror?

Kinda...but keep the nutsert from turning while you tightening the bolt. Once you install the nutsert then remove the bolt and then install your mirror. You need to 'set' the nutsert first before installing the mirror. Here is a pic of a new and old nutsert

got it.kinda seems like a pair of visegrips would work for holding the rivnut eh?
