Hey. Just changed my front springs, put the wheels back on and lowered the car off of the jack but now my front shocks won't go back on. It's like they're not long enough now to reach the perch. Is this common?
No, shouldn't make a difference. Maybe the shock is compressed and you just need to pull the rod out.
nope. I fully extended the rod. it's close but not there. should I try putting a jack under my lower control arm to try and compress the spring some? Will that hurt the shock when I lower it by trying to over extend?
That's what I'm wondering because this is wierd. Spring part # is CS8306. I got them from advanced auto parts for a '71 Maverick with a 4.1L 250 engine.... I didn't pick the spring myself, their computer did.
This website shows them on page 7 as being for a 67-70 mustang I6 & V8 http://www.sacramento-mustang.com/sm/catalog/susp.pdf Mustangs Unlimited has the CS8306 01 as being for a 67-70 I6 & 289 V8. Guessing they are the same... Does this mean I have the wrong ones on there?
My parts interchange book says 70-74 maverick is interchangeable with 65-66 mustang springs but that doesn't help any....
what would be the fastest way to fix that? oh, and can i drive the car down my driveway to paint it without the shocks installed? (was supposed to be painting at 6 this morning until this happened)
ether go get the right springs, or cut a coil off the new ones, you should be ok driving it down your driveway
ok. just got off the phone with advanced. the springs they sell for 71 w/ ac (what I have) is 1.3" longer than the springs for non-AC go figure. I'm going to try those spring clamps on them. see any problems with this as a quick fix - permanent if it will work that way..? I don't have anything to cut the springs right now and I'm supposed to be on the road by saturday.
if you don't want to cut the springs, a set of those spring lowering clamps should work. I don't see why they wouldn't. You can cut the spring with a $19.99 angle grinder and a cut-off wheel but I understand not wanting to cut it right at the moment just in case.
oops. I already went out and bought the clamps. If I had known one of those $20 grinders would cut them I might have tried it. This is will probably be better for a newbie tho. Less chance to do permanent damage and longer delays on getting this done. Thanks for your help man. I'll post and let you know how it worked out.
HERE IS A CHART, I CAN'T SEEM TO COPY AND PASTE IT SO IM ATTACHING A LINK: http://101part.com/coilsprings/ford/maverick.htm
