I've had my 74 Mav for a while now. Lots of people have told me that I should switch to a more powerful engine but I refuse to because I bought the car with 47,000 original miles on the original engine. I feel there is no need for that since I would rather just drive it to hell and back before I switch the engine. The suggestions I'm asking for though is what are things that I should look into adding to the engine to try to get the most out of it? Or is the stock engine a no when adding things to it to get the most out of it?
check these places out... http://www.cliffordperformance.net/ http://www.classicinlines.com/AlumSpecs.asp http://fordsix.com/ and a mav holds the second fastest time. http://www.classicinlines.com/racetimes.asp
Thanks for the info. I'm not exactly the biggest car buff when it comes to the mechanics so I'm sort of lost when you showed me those sites. I'll have to sit down and see which one is right for me though since they all seem to sell everything in packages.
Are you after more HP than stock? How fast do you need to spin the engine for what you want out of it? Will it be a daily drive? Do you want good mileage? Do you want a smooth idle or choppy idle? Will it run an automatic? How much is your budget?
Is all of the above an option? It will be my daily driver yes. I would just like to get the most out of the engine. Mileage would be nice since I am looking into putting in a bigger gas tank anyway since I saw an article here about it. My idle so far right now is smooth since I had the exhaust system on it changed since it was rusted when I bought it. My budget right now is $3,000 that my sister will be paying back to me within the week.
$3000 wont go very far but it can get you some power increase. If this is going to be a daily driver you are going to want it to be dependable and good on gas. You can do that with about 300 HP (slightly less).
Your absolutely right take care of the car and drive that engine until it starts to get bad, but along the way open a special savings account to drop money in for a 347 Stroker.
I missed something. Is it a straight six engine or a 302? I didn't see that mentioned anywhere. If it's a 302 then $3000 should get him PLENTY of added HP. I know nothing about hot-rodding a 6 banger. clint
Actually, I decided to stick with the 6 cylinder in the car. Went to Fordsix.com and saw some fun things that can be done to these engines. But thanks for the replies from the last two even though it's an old thread
When it comes to tight budgets its usually cheaper to buy a motor someone else has sunk thousands of dollars into then later wants to sell them for pennys on the dollar. Check e-bay I have seen lots of good short blocks sell cheap.
