I`m having a little trouble putting together a stock 302 and need some help. The block rods and pistons are from a 86(I think) t bird non HO and the crank is from a 86(I think) f150 . Some how the rods are too wide for the crank , you simply can not get two rods on same jurnal . I have a `85(for sure) 302 with a good crank but I don`t want to tear it down just to find out it won`t work as well. So what year did they make the rods wider or the crank jurnal narrower ? Any help would be greatly appreciated !
The t bird engine was in my maverick and I`m the one that pulled it out of the t bird so I know its for sure a 5.0 , the sides of the pistons even say 5.0 . I pulled the 302 out of the f150 as well , it said 5.0 on the intake and I had to grind the block when I turned it into a 347 so I pretty certain it was a 302 also . I would just use the pistons and rods from that engine but I tossed them out when I built the stroker since there was no chance of me ever needing them again .
you may have the rods flipped, one side has a bevel that is suppose to face the edge of the rod journal, to clear the radius at the sides.
I`ll double check that tonight but I had the dot on the pistons facing forward so that should have been correct too ?
Ditto. I'll bet the rods are bass-ackwards too. All the cranks are the same as far as rod journal width goes. The only change in cranks was the switch to the 50 oz cranks in 81-82
Oops, we ended up getting the 400 rods/pistons since we already payed to machine the crank. So my buddies Dad ended up with a 400 Rebuild for his Torino instead of his 351M
Y`all were right I just had some of the rods on backwards . Sometimes I amaze myself with my own stupidity , thanks for the help.
All he had to do was swap them from one side to the other, the pistons would still be facing the correct way.
