I`m having a little trouble putting together a stock 302 and need some help. The block rods and pistons are from a 86(I think) t bird non HO and the crank is from a 86(I think) f150 . Some how the rods are too wide for the crank , you simply can not get two rods on same jurnal :hmmm:. I have a `85(for sure) 302 with a good crank but I don`t want to tear it down just to find out it won`t work as well. So what year did they make the rods wider or the crank jurnal narrower ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Either the rods or crank are not for a 302 ford.check the Pn#'s on em.

The t bird engine was in my maverick and I`m the one that pulled it out of the t bird so I know its for sure a 5.0 , the sides of the pistons even say 5.0 . I pulled the 302 out of the f150 as well , it said 5.0 on the intake and I had to grind the block when I turned it into a 347 so I pretty certain it was a 302 also . I would just use the pistons and rods from that engine but I tossed them out when I built the stroker since there was no chance of me ever needing them again .

you may have the rods flipped, one side has a bevel that is suppose to face the edge of the rod journal, to clear the radius at the sides.

I`ll double check that tonight but I had the dot on the pistons facing forward so that should have been correct too ?

Ditto. I'll bet the rods are bass-ackwards too. All the cranks are the same as far as rod journal width goes. The only change in cranks was the switch to the 50 oz cranks in 81-82

Unless the pistons were installed backwards in the original app.
    Stranger things have happened...

    I mixed up 351m rods/pistons and a 400 crank. :yikes:

Oops, we ended up getting the 400 rods/pistons since we already payed to machine the crank. So my buddies Dad ended up with a 400 Rebuild for his Torino instead of his 351M

All he had to do was swap them from one side to the other, the pistons would still be facing the correct way.

Not if the pistons are on the rod backwards.
