i am running slapper bars on my 73' grabber. would it hurt to put the rear shock mounts on the same side of the rear axial? corbin, said the 69.5-70 were this way from he factory. are the top mounts in the same place? if i do, would they be put on the front or back? duh, kelly is coming by this morning around 8:00 in his 69.5' i will look at his...thanks...frank...:bananaman :bananaman
Frank; the reason they staggered the shocks was to prevent wheel hop. You have the traction bars, so guess it wouldn't hurt. Can you change the spring shock plate around to accomodate that, or would you have to change the upper mount too? If you could figure out a way to get my shocks to stagger, I have the upper mounts for the 'front of axle' non-staggered mounts on mine that we could trade...if it would work. I will call you when I get back. Earl
well kelly, came and went and i forgot to look at his shocks. would anyone know if the shocks could be put on one side of the rear end without changing the top mounts?...frank...:bananaman :bananaman
Nope Frank ...you gotta change them you welcome to come by and look at my 69.5 if you want. I really cant remember if the brackets are made different ,or if they are just flipped around.
The leaf spring mount would be easy to modify but it would be major surgury to move the upper mount. If you really wanted both shocks on the same side, youd need a doner 70 and cut out the upper cross panel that has the mounts attached. Then you'd have to cut your cross panel and weld the 70 in.
dennis, thanks but no thanks. a little more than i would want to do . you are right, that sounds like major work...frank...:bananaman :bananaman p.s. " youd " ??
Shock mounting. I'm thinking about welding a crossmember in for a new upper shock mounting point and to move the shocks inboard. Anyone else done this (that wasn't going to four link or ladder bar)?
I believe Cometgt1974 and Purple70 could give you some info about putting the new crossmember in and moving the shocks behind the axle. Seems like Steven said that the shocks dont need to be perfectly streight ...but slightly angled towards the front of the car at the top. like this / .
yes cometgt1974 put in an upper shockmount from like competition engineering.....as far a jim(purple70)a.k.a. barney...his has coilover setup like mine.....his is a ladderbar car.
I welde a pipe from frame to frame with the upper mounts welde to it. I then put the shocks behind the rear end..then used slappers.and individually lined air shocks to adjust rear tire load for the strip. I took the early front mounted lower shock mount and just flipped it to the rear on the opposite side..forget which one is in the front from the factory ( on staggered shock cars)
