Im running this style gas cap on my 70 model Mav that supposedly has an unvented gas tank, while I havn't yet had a problem with it I do notice it sucking alot of air in when I remove the cap. Is their the potential for a problem here? If so what's the cure? I ain't givin up my gas cap
well, not sure about the maverick, but I have seen tanks sucked closed with mismatched gas caps. or old aluminum fuel cells when people dont vent them. Its pretty awesome the power of a little vacuum build up in a tank can do. A fix, is there anyway to drill a small hole to vent the cap? It doesnt have to be much. on my mustang, the fuel cell is vented out the filler neck by a fitting and a peice of rubber hose... kinda different scenario than you though.
Rick, I was thinking the exact thing. I dont see why it would not work. Maybe even take a small fitting to attach a piece of small hose to vent it away from the trunk latch. Trunk latch = slammed shut = kaboom if vapors have built up for some reason? Dan
Off we go into the wild blue yonder, flying high into the sky .... just me and my Maverick. :bananaman
I would modify the cap. Maybe cut some 1/8" slots in the gasket about 90 degrees apart so it cant form a complete seal on the filler neck. The 70 Maverick used a vented cap. All the rest were vented from the top of the tank, to the carbon canister.
I have a 77 Mav. and it has a plastic vent on top of the tank. If your tank is not vented in this way I would some how vent the gas cap.
I would think that if you vented out of the filler neck, you would have the small potential of gas shooting out when you are filling the tank. Vent the cap.
If you drill the neck remember drills get hot and gas burns, I don't want to read about a new altitude record with the flying high maverick. It is nice to fly high with the eagles but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines
gas cap All you have to do, is on the tank side of the cap, plastic part in the center, use a 1/8" drill bit and drill a hole just thru the plastic part. You don't have to go clear thru the metal outside part. You can even unscrew it from the outer metal part first if you want. To test it, just blow and then suck on the hole you drilled. You'll feel the air flow with it.
