the easist way is o look at the timing all the h.o's wer timed 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 and non h.o's wer timed 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 so if u looking at a compleat engin just look it the timing
I bought a rebuild 88 non-HO. It has valve reliefs in the pistons. Is that part of the HO package? the flat-tops? It sure helped out when I put in a big cam and 1.7 rockers, since I have LOTS of piston-valve clearance.
If it was rebuilt Scott...The pistons are aftermarket.88 HO 5 liters had dished pistons from the factory.Flat tops go a long way towards making better compression in allmost all instances.
Yeah, but what is compression worth if you don't have any valve lift or duration? I may only have 9 or 9.5 to 1 but I have a heckuva cam and lots of gas getting in, and lots of exhaust getting out. My pistons are definitely aftermarket (.040 over), but they allow my valves to really move around allowing intake and exhaust to flow freely. Bradley, those look just like my pistons.

OK, pulled some heads. First up is the 86 engine I could not read the head casting very well. Maybe somebody here can decipher it. Here is a piston pic. Looks dished to me although a very shallow dish.
The 87 engine had same pistons as pictured by Bradleygt. Head casting was E7TE. Anything good out of all this mess?
If you're rebuilding and replacing the pistons, it makes no difference which block you choose. And not all flat topped with relief pistons will increase the compression ration. This is because the pin heights vary from 1.585 to 1.619. Choose your pistons carefully. The stock Ford 90's hypereutectic pistons have a pin height that yeilds a -.003 deck clearance. That means the pin height is in the 1.610 area. I have some of these I'll have to measure & post on later.
Those are the E6SE heads. The chamber volume is 68ccs although the chamber itself looks smaller than the E7TE head. This is due to the fact that the chamber of the E6 head is deeper, which also puts the valve heads about 1/8" farther away from the piston. That's the reason the pistons in the E6 headed engines have no valve reliefs.
Not true, the F4TE cammed 5.0's from the 94-97 F & E series trucks and vans plus the 96-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0's are not HO engines but do have the HO firing order.
