Sorry for the noobish question but did the Comet GTs have any badging in th interior to set them apart from the non-GTs? Thanks B-Stone
if the interior is now clear, what badging did they have on the outside? hood emblem & scripture on the trunk lid, but anything on the fenders or behind the rear quarter window?
The only thing I have seen that would identify a GT are the graphics, maybe the scoop. As far as I know there is no code that indicates "GT". I could be wrong about this, but that is what I understand at this time. Maybe the masters of info will chime in soon after they get home from rideing in there driveable Comets and GT's, tearing up ass fault, unlike me.
Another good way to know ,wich i alaways look for, is to see if it has a adjustable mirror hole inside the door paneling, all GT's and grabbers had adjustable sport mirror on the driver side, some standard comets did have an adjustable sport mirror.... but this is "1" way of looking for hints.
I don't know about master... ...but Gene is correct-no VIN code specific to GT's. It was an appearance option only. Marti Report is the only sure way to know-or original sales info/window sticker...or witnessed statement signed in blood and notarized! ( j/k)
No special badging on the interior, but they did have the deluxe door panels with the little sunburst looking medalion on them. - Matt
Check the floor pans under the carpet. This doesnt mean its a GT but not having these means its 100% not a GT, all bucket cars have bucket seat supports inside on the floor boards where a bench seat car does not have these.
OK...a couple of further questions... Are the front fenders interchangeable and if so, what years work for a 74 comet? Also, did the GTs only come with floor shift or did they also have column? I notice that every pic of a Comet GT I could find has a floor shift. Thanks again
huh.... that green car i showed you had adjustable driver side mirrors but it was just a 302 mav...:16suspect ill check for sport mirrors next time
Mavericks were built from '69-'77. Comets from '71-'77. Fenders are the same for both cars from '69-'72. Fenders changed in '73 because of the federally mandated bumpers being mounted away from the car. There is a notch on '72 and earlier fenders. This can be cut out of a later fender to go on an early car a little easier than it is to add it back on an early fender for a later car. Easy answer-look for a '73 and up Maverick or Comet fender for your '74 Comet. They are the same. All Comets and Maverick came standard with column shift manuals. Optional was the automatic tranny. Another option was to put the shifter on the floor, manual OR automatic. Good eye, MOST of the Comet GT's that I have seen in person have a floor shifter from the factory. 5 Comet GT's in my high school parking lot in the mid 80's-all A/T in the floor.
Reason for all the questions is I am trying to figure out if this guys car is a legit GT or if it is pieced together. No stripe on the side but suppose it could have been painted at some point. Here is the interior shot he sent. The steering wheel wrap and black dash make it seem legit but... Thanks
Look down the sides at different angles. It takes time to get the stripes completly sanded off. Maybe you will detect something, either extra smooth or a hint of graphics. The interior to me looks like it's possible that it is. I'm no expert tho. That center console I don't think came with our cars. I have not ever seen a dash that had lower air vents and not have the center dash vent but .
