I searched, but can't find an answer. What is the advantage of 5 lug over 4 lug? My 1970 Maverick, 200, 3 on the tree, has a 4 lug rear and I am planning a V8 swap. Thanks for your input. Jason
your car has a 7.5 rear and will not hold up to the power of a stock 2 barrel 302 . you need an 8 inch rear 4 or 5 lug will both work
The rear is smooth, no bolts. It has 10 bolts on the front. Do you think it's a 7.5 or an 8? Everything I could find said the 7.5 has bolts on the rear. Jason
so can i use the carriage (ring, pinion, side gears ect) out of the 4 lug to swap over to a blown 5 lug?
You can use a pumpkin from a 4 lug 8" in a 5 lug 8". They are the same. Nothing from your 7.5 will fit.
Many 1970 models came with an 8" - just the earlier cars have the 7.5 ---- the 8" will handle a mildly built 302 just fine. Here is a thread about swapping axles that should help you. http://www.mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=20444&highlight=bearing+diameter
