Welcome to the forums! I just picked up a 63 comet as well this year also. Have already begun work and parts collecting, but am driving it all summer before tearing into it to deeply.

My first IBM machine was a PS/2 Model 30. I had the 8086 version which didn't have the crazy Microchannel slots but it did have 8-bit ISA. By the time I retired it, (for an IBM L40SX B/W 386 laptop running Win 3.1) I had it running a true VGA card (16-bit card in an 8-bit slot, yes it worked!) an original 8-bit SoundBlaster, and a screamin 14.4 modem. I had a 30MB hard drive in that thing too! All DOS of course... It was a fantastic BBS rig.

Before that I ran Commodores, couple of TRS/80's and my favorite - the Atari 130XE. Those computers really should have been taken more seriously in their day. The Atari was like the Commodore in some ways, but better. Same 6502 processor. Way more capable BASIC interpreter, 4-channel audio, higher resolution graphics... I was actually writing complex programs for that thing including a lot of direct memory pokes, machine language routines... That was when I was 12-14. Then I joined the rest of the world and got an IBM, discovered that none of my 'leet programming skills were useful anymore, and that was the last programming I did until I started doing browser-based stuff as an adult. (PHP, Javascript, etc.)

Tylar, I'm typing on a Kubuntu machine right now. Kubuntu's been my weapon of choice for I guess about 3 years now. Used to be very into Debian, still am for servers, but for the desktop Ubuntu really has got it together. And I hate GNOME, so Kubuntu's the way to go for me... This machine doesn't have the vidcard to do what yours is doing though.
