I agree I think you guys are really underestimating the 200. My engine has plenty of power, it's my transmission that lags so hard during shifts that slows it down. If it was a standard I think it would be kind of quick actually.
when my maverick was a stock 302 w/ just duel exaust and 245's on the rear and it had 114000k on it. i took it out to track (sea level) the best i could get out of it was a mid 16 in the 1/4 i heard people running high 15s in a "stock 302" maverick before but don't know if it was true. i wouldn't think a stock and tired i would presume 250 would anybetter then 16.50.. just my 1 cent
ROFLMAO thats just too funny. Max I don't think anyone HATES the 6 at all. That engine is probably one of the toughest engines ever made, Gawd at the abuse it can take. If I was using my car on a daily basis, say to and from work and such...I would probably prefer the 6 to the 8. They were made for economy and reliability.
The 200 six was many things, although fast was not one of them. Certainly couldn't do 0-60 in two seconds, that's for sure...
When I was in school back in the early 70,s my best friend had a 67 fairlane with a 200 6 that was the fastest 6 cyn. in school, once I got in a race with him in my 272 v8 crown victoria out on hwy 199, he had slowed down to about 50 and when I pulled out to pass the race was on, I got about 1 foot in front of him and we raced for about a mile or more side by side and I couldn't get around him, I was so embrassised, A 6 staying with a v8! The next year a 6cyn. Maverick beat the fairlane and was king until this @63 vailant with a 225 slant six showed up. It wasn't pretty but it would smoke the old 13in tires, it ruled the 6 cyn. boys all the way thru school, I kept away from that thing in the crown!
I have been thinking about building a 300 ci truck motor for sometime now. Seen a Mav about 7 years ago with one that ran if memory serves, high 10s all motor. Ran on alcohol. I only seen it once at Edgewater raceway in cincinnati.
250 ET I saw a reprint of an old road test somewhere. with the optional 250 engine and 3 speed manual the Mav turned 18.0 ET. Not a bad starting point. I think I'm gonna stay with the 250 in mine. I do wish the hop up stuff wasnt so expensive compared to the V8s though.
i dont know jack bout 200 performace.. but my 250 had tons of torque... 250 ft-lbs at the wheels. i could keep up good with civics and such, but they always got me off the line cuz my low end would roast my tires. oh yeah i got the torque reading for the school chassis dyno. it also did 60hp at the wheels. i have faith in who ever beefs up a I6 - it has good potential. id do it, but its cheaper to build a 302, which now rests between my frame rails.
What gear did you have? My 250 will barely squeal a tire and that's under ideal conditions. It has a 2.79:1 gear.
ive havent checked out the door code, but on my rearend housing it is marked 330...wich i think is 3.30:1.. only other things my car had going for it were 1.75" exhaust dumping into a 2" glasspack, open air cleaner, and old 175/75R14's... also having the weight of only a 2dr helped, as well as doing my burnouts in my brick alley. as for a tranny all i had then and now is a c4. my odometer reads like 25k but i think it was more like 125k. so i dont know why your mav wouldnt be as good as mine... I also ran the piss out of it. im very hard on cars. i think just about all of the lifters were flatend toward the time i pulled the engine. i dont know how many rpms i was turning at 107mph.. but it must have ben north of 6500 mayby more than 7k i dont know.
The six-cylinder Maverick is not a hot rod or drag car. It gets the car from point "A" to point "B" and that's it. Accept it for what it is, because "denial" is not a river in Egypt...
hey sideburns . you should have been at round-up and see a 300 six banger with TWIN HOLLEYS(450's) everyone rushed to hear and see it go. It run low 11's in the 1/4 according to the owner.had home made intake, and headers. very nice car Impressive no one was picking on 6's. I had one along time ago with twin side draft carbs.cant beat the sound of a high revin 6
