are the battery cables in good condition?
do the ground cables have good contact?
is there paint under the engine ground cable?

if your distrubtor timeing is to advanced it will have a hard time cranking fast. try disconectiing the coil wire and see if it will crank faster. if it does then you know thats your problem.

yep that (timing way off) will load your cylinders full of fuel and it builds too much pressure and not enough relief.

Yep, the starter on my grandpa's '78 Bronco Ranger XLT was like that. It was turning over too slow to start most of the time, and drawing a ton of amps under load, would run the battery dead in extremely fast.. Tested fine when it was off the vehicle...

A motor (starter motor) under load will certainly act differently then one that is just free-wheeling on a test bench
