72' Mav. 250 straight 6. removed front of motor pump and cover etc.timing chain was way too loose. needed to be repaced bad i could see feal the damage and how loose it was when i moved the timing chain cover out 2 inches. and thats the problem it only moves 2 inches.the cover due to how it is shaped has to be moved straight out away from the motor. can not be removed by pulling up on the cover.thus my problem is the gear for center pulley sits 3 inches to high for me to pull the cover off(top half of gear obstructing).and seems to run thru the block do i have to lift the motor and drop the lower end to get clearance? are there clips inside the oil pan area where i can un clip this timing cover? Thanks for you help!!!!
Sorry I'm a bit confused. The pulley your referring to is the Crank pulley?? If so it has to be removed off the crank before removing timing cover.
yeah crank pulley is what it is. and for the second comment yeah i figured as much i got the 4 bolts on the oil pan off so it moves a inch or 2 but loookin at it now,it wont come off cause of the ring around the crank pulley. this blows.such an easy part to do.well it seemed that way.atleast these cars are easy to work on.i dont have to take the entire motor and tranny out to do this.il just lift it a foot and drop everything on the buttom till i get to it. thanks for your time.
You will need a harmonic balancer puller to remove the harmonic balancer. You need to keep the engine from turning when removing the bolt from the crankshaft. You MIGHT be able to get to the harmonic balancer after you remove the grille and radiator.
the rubber that sits between the pulley and gearwheel has broken apart in the process of me messing around with the timing cover.any help with how much trouble ive got myself into taking that off? i cant see any markings on it for putting it back on.. thanks
i think you are talking about the seal?? if so you need to get a new one and replace it. should come in the gasket set for the cover.
il post a pic tonight.july 17th some time. i got a 312 id liek to just throw in this winter.but i figured just that id do it this winter. i would still like to see this (250) motor running if i could help it. my wallets kinda empty.maybe il just say forget it and get a head start and swappin motors. thanks for all ur help.
Who counts an overbore to add to cubic inch? A .030 over on a 302 is still a 302 in my book. Now if you stroke the crank then its a different ballgame
