I'm trying to get the steering gear box out of my '74 maverick to get it rebuilt. I have it completely unbolted and it's currently sitting on the frame rail. I have the rag joint disassembled as well. I do have full length hooker headers installed. I was going to try and get it over to a shop tomarrow on my day off so I'm trying to get it out tonight but I don't think thats going to happen. HELP!!!

Do I have to remove my master cylinder? or what? I'll appreciate any and all info. thank you.

David; been there, done that! Take the driver side header loose, and take it out of the car. With that header out, the box will come out. Be carefull, and you have to turn it a time or two to get it out. Good luck!

I was afraid of that... it was hitting the #6 pipe when I tried to take the box out through the bottom... Thank you.

well... I got the driver side header unbolted but can't get it out... thought I would try and manuver the box out around the loose header which may be posible if I could be in two places at once but I haven't figured out how to do that... I guess I'll have to put that on hold till my wife feels better, or I could call and pay for a mobile mechanic to come by but that'll suck to have to pay for an extra set of hands and not for expertese or ability... I don't have any friends to call over for help and I don't know any neighbers...

any advice? I would appreciate it. thank you.

do you have a hoist for your motor? that often works as a second set of hands...

No hoist, I have tried to tie my headers up but can never get them placed right.

take a jack and raise the engine about 3-4 inches on that side...remove motor mount bolt first, watch the fan if you have a shroud...disconnect batt.:yup:

what frank said. you most likely wont get the room by moving the header that couple inches. moving the motor was where i was going too.

i dont have hooker headers so im not sure, does it look like jacking up that side of the car will let you move everything enough? i know it would not with the hedmans

Jacking up the car wouldn't have done anything except give me a little more arm room...

I just got the thing out, I had to work it and the header to wiggle it out, to bad I got it out to late to take it over to the rebuild shop... I'll have to do that tomarrow, than I can figure out how in the #ELL to get it back in there... Thanks for the advice, in afew days I'll probably be posting a thread saying "Steering Gearbox Install Help" if I get stuck.

Now that you have the box out...remove the header so its out of the way when you re-install the box.Its alot of work now but soo much easier when you put it all back together.

Now if I can remember how that thing went in or will come out... if I remember right it requires the car lifted than the engine lifted afew inches higher out of the engine compartment... is that about right? thanks.
