ok... heres my question. Ive got a 1979 351w block. with a ford racing flywheel part# M-6375-A302. 157 tooth. Im putting a manual trans in the car.. (tko-500) I need to find a starter for this thing. anyone got any ideas on what i should use? the tranny came with the bellhousing. The company that i got the trans/bell from said it was a 1983-1995 mustang bell. im not sure that they had 157 tooth flywheels in 1983-1995 mustangs tho. any help would be greatly appreciated!

get a starter for a 93 mustang. its a compact high torque unit that is smaller than a maverick starter. you just need to do the wireing alittle bit different. search for high torque stater wireing.

Are '93 mustang starters set up for a 157 tooth flywheel then?

It depends on the bell housing that you are using. If you have the "large bell you will need a 164 tooth.

My 351w has a 157 tooth flex and I'm using the original 302 starter with no issues. I've also used the starter that was on the 351 with no issues.

    Tooth count. Or starter placement.

Yep! if the bell will fit over the larger flywheel it is a big bell. If you have a big bell and a small ring gear (157 tooth) then the starter will not engage the flywheel teeth correctly. It will sound terrible and likely break teeth off the starter or ring gear or both.
