There is a Ford 250 block off of a 77 Mav that someone is selling for $75. It will need to be rebuilt and I'm seriously considering buying it and swapping it out for the 200 in my 74 Mav.

I do admit though I don't know much about these engines yet and I don't really plan on having something like a 302 or anything bigger. My question is though, what more advantages does the 250 offer than the 200? Is it more economical or something? I'm sure I may see some increase in HP. Can someone fill me in on the positives if I end up going through with this possible idea?

I believe at the least you will need a different transmission!

Yes, transmission swap is a big factor. The 250 will take anything that fits on the 302, so your choices in transmissions will go up. The 250 is also better for power if your car has A/C and power steering. I have had 200's with both a C4 and 3 speed and have always been happy with the power - but my cars didn't have A/C or power steering.

I looked up the hp specs in an old ford shop manual. it daesnt have the hp of a v8 but factory it generates like 150 horse and 196 ft-lbs at 1600 rpm. it has far more low torque than the 302. but v8s are cooler in my book.
